War on Democracy - US backed 1973 coup in Chile By John Pilger

An excerpt from John Pilger's documentary The War on Democracy, which recounts the involvement of the United States government in the brutal 1973 military coup that overthrew the democratic socialist government of President Salvador Allende -- paradoxically on September 11. It ushered in a regime of torture and tyranny.

  1. I heard Kissinger claim that America didn't organize the 1973 coup. But Colin Powell said America wasn't proud of 1973. ?

Didn't the legislature initially endorse the removal of Allende? But later Pinochet dissolved them and did not allow a new election until 1989. Why didn't Pinochet allow elections after he removed Allende?

  2. Bosch: Presidente en la frontera imperial [Bosch: President at the Imperial Front], a documentary film written and directed by the Dominican cineaste René Fortunato, will be presented at an act in homage to former President Juan Bosch and the Constitution of 1963. The events will take place on September 27 at 7:30pm at Parque Independencia [Independence Park] in Santo Domingo with a free screening of the film as part of the commemoration.  The documentary is a dramatic account of the most relevant moments of the constitutional government headed by Juan Bosch, which had massive popular support, showing its contributions and achievements as well as the process that led to the proclamation of the new Constitution of the Republic on April 29, 1963. Bosch’s democratic government, which received almost 70% of the votes in 1962, was toppled by a coup on September 25, 1963. The events at Parque Independencia will serve to render tribute, not only to the memory of Juan Bosch, but also to the men and women who defended the Constitution in the streets of Santo Domingo in 1965.

  3. BOGOTA, Colombia (AFP) -- The United States knew about an abortive coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in 2002, and may even have taken part, former US president Jimmy Carter has told a Colombian newspaper.

  4. Mara, Carter doesn't seem informed about many of these issues these days.

It seems clear to me that neither Powell, nor Armitage, nor Rice, nor Rumsfeld, nor Bush knew about (let alone organized) the coup before it happened. Some smart people, however, think some Cuban Americans in the State Department might have gone off the pasture and done something on their own. When Powell and Armitage found out; they pulled these guys back and helped Chavez return to power.

Remember that many large US based MNCs and the Wall Street Journal OP ED page endorsed Chavez' election and reelection in 2004. Chavez had and continues to have many powerful American allies.

  6. Dedé Mirabal will read Saturday at 4 p.m. from her new Spanish-language book, “Vivas en su Jardín” (“Alive in their Garden”), about her three sisters, who were assassinated for opposing former Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.

  7. Marta Rojas, who was present at the Moncada trial, explains that the book faithfully details how Haydée really was, her capacity for hard work, and her close relationship with Fidel (Castro) and “Che” (Guevara), all from the close and familiar perspective of her daughter Celia, who died tragically last year in a fatal accident. Rojas also highlighted the willpower, character, and sensibility that allowed Santamaría to direct Casa de las Américas for so many years, gathering the most important intellectuals of the times.

  8. Mara, a Brazilian friend once asked me what is it with your crazies in the Latin American section in your state department. President Bush did appoint some unusual people during his first term.

In America, ethnic lobbies can be very powerful. This includes the Mexican lobby, Cuban American lobby, Israeli lobby, Saudi lobby (which I think does great harm to America and the world), China lobby, Indian lobby, British lobby, Japanese lobby (they are very impressive), Taiwanese lobby, etc.

  9. Listen you little fucker (anan) this is the legacy you support,  all departments are complicit in these atrocities.  All of it - the murder,  the torture,  the pauperism of the people and their consequent exploitation.  You are a little dipshit,  that needs the blood of those tortured smeared on your rat-like face and have the stench fill and foul your virgin nostrils.  They need to detain you in facilities where you hear the screams of men, women and children and see them tortured to death.  Than you need to be tied down in the middle of a fucking battlefield until you go totally insane or die from fright.  That is what you deserve for what you so wantonly support.
