The women of Bahrain
Many people may tire of images of Bahraini women defying riot cops--sometimes singlehandedly; or they may think it routine now to see thousands of Bahraini women braving tear gas to stand up for democratic rights. Those observers may say, “now we know why the kids of Bahrain are such rebels; their mamas were no damn good & taught them too well.” But those who cherish human freedom look to these women as the mothers of revolution--not as our peers but as teachers.
The sisters/teachers here hold banners saying “No U Turn” meaning “No turning back” at a rally organized by Bahrain’s main opposition group Al Wefaq in Budaiya, Bahrain on Feb. 6th. ((Photo by Hamad I Mohammed/Reuters)
