How did 100,000,000 women disappear?

Two researchers crunching population statistics have confirmed an unsettling reality. Siwan Anderson and Debraj Ray noticed the ratio of women to men in developing regions and in some cultures is suspiciously below the norm.

In India, China and sub-Saharan Africa, millions upon millions of women are missing. They are not lost, but dead: victims of violence, discrimination and neglect.

A University of British Columbia economist is amongst those trying to find them – not the women themselves, who are long gone, but their numbers and ages, which paint a sad and startling picture of gender discrimination in the developing world.

The term "missing women" was coined in 1990, when Indian economist Amartya Sen calculated a shocking figure. In parts of Asia and Africa, he wrote in The New York Review of Books, 100 million women who should be alive are not, because of unequal access to medical care, food and social services. These are excess deaths: women "missing" above and beyond natural mortality rates, compared to their male counterparts.

  2. It appears to be even worse than the article's title.

"His research began a flutter of activity in academic circles and by 2005, the United Nations produced a much higher estimate for how many women could be "missing": <span style="text-decoration: underline;">200 million.</span>"

  3. TGIA, get ready for another Anand classic if he tries to justify, rationalize, or deny the facts about "Blessed Holy Mother India", especially considering that Amartya Sen, an Indian, is the guy who sparked this whole issue!

  4. Unfortunately, India has some pro choice people. Many female fetuses are aborted. Ditto with China.

Huge problem. It is a very emotional issue; and a national shame and disgrace. It is often discussed.

  5. Anand:Unfortunately, India has some pro choice people. Many female fetuses are aborted.

JESUS ANAND!  You really need professional help ASAP.

TGIA, Anand recently said that India needs higher birthrates!(Surely that's one for your "Anand Files".)

Anand, are you aware of a phenomenon called overpopulation? You might google it and educate yourself
instead spouting off what really appears to be clinically insane ramblings, or the words of someone who has had a traumatic head injury that was not properly taken care of.  India already has zillions of hungry, impoverished, uneducated kids that the government simply flushes down that toilet. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">THAT'S THE NATIONAL SHAME AND DISGRACE OF INDIA.</span> THE ARTICLE WAS VERY CLEAR THAT ITS NUMBERS DIDN"T COME FROM ABORTED FEMALE FETUSES. APPARENTLY YOU NEED TO READ IT AGAIN. OH, AND PLEASE DO GO BACK TO THE DOCTOR AND GET THAT HEAD INJURY LOOKED AT. IT'S REALLY AFFECTING YOUR READING COMPREHENSION SEVERELY. YOU MUST HAVE MISSED THIS:
"Previously, people had thought that they (the missing women) were all at the very early stages of life, prenatal or just after, so before four years old," Anderson says. "But what we found is that the majority are actually later." Female infanticide has been endemic in India and China for some time, which she says led researchers to assume that it was the source of all the missing women. But the truth is much more complicated.
Once she and Ray broke down the numbers by age group, they found that the majority of excess female deaths came later in life: 66 per cent in India, 55 per cent in China and 83 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa." DID YOU GET THAT THIS TIME?

Not at all surprised that you are against "pro choice" individuals in India. Individual Liberty terrifies you. You are a fascist, that's why you like the fascistic BJP.

WASHINGTON — An elderly man walked into the Holocaust Museum, one of the capital’s most-visited sites, shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday and opened fire with a shoulder weapon or pistol, wounding a security guard before being shot himself, officials said.

  8. Life expectancy in India is in seventy years versus 30 years when the socialists ruled. Woman have "higher" life expectancy than men. This suggests that females have a larger chance of living out in the first few years of life than males. India, however, has an epidemic of female fetus abortions. It is a massive national disgrace.

India' birth rate is too low:
    http://www.indexmundi.com/g/g.aspx?v=25&c=in&l=en
As a result India's population is aging. In the long run, this will make taking care of India's retirees extremely challenging.

More people, means more knowledge workers. This means faster global technological innovation and higher living standards for our species. More people is good.

Poverty in India has fallen dramatically. However, India still has far too many poor people. Thanks for caring about poor Indians.

DJ, maybe you should help Arabs. They aren't doing nearly as well economically as Indians are.

  9. India doesn't need more babies. It needs to care for the ones it already has, instead of flushing zillions of children down the toilet and keeping them hungry, impoverished and uneducated. THAT IS THE NATIONAL DISGRACE.

Instead, India has been spending money on
    ICBMs!!!!

  14. Overpopulation
"Although people no longer talk about a catastrophic “population bomb,” world population continues to grow. Unfortunately, the most affected countries are also the ones least able to support more people."

  17. TGIA, by what metric does India have excessive population growth? What is wrong with India's population growing 1.4% or 1.5% a year? If India's people want to have kids, good for them.

DJ, India isn't spending that much on ICBMs. India spends far more on its star wars missile defense shield it is jointly buidling with Israel.

India is also building a 5th Generation stealth fighter. I think America should sell India F 22s. It would be cheaper than India developing its own equivalent aircraft. Unfortunately the wackos in Congress refuse to sell the F 22 to Japan, Australia, India and other responsible nations. Some Congress people aren't known for their intelligence.

As a result India, Japan, and other countries are developing their own 5th Gen aircraft on their own. Personally, if America doesn't sell the F 22 to India, I think India and Japan should jointly develop their own fighter aircraft.

BTW, if the Palestinians were smart, they would lobby for America, Japan and India to jointly develop their own missile defence shield. This would be devastating to the Israeli defense industry. {40% of Israel's defense exports go to India, and Israel's R&D is increasingly a joint venture with India.} Are the Palestinians smart enough to do this?

  18. You know Anand, you and fleming are like matching stupid bookends. There is only a few that a "national security state" benefits, not the people. It sucks the people dry both foreign and domestic, it results in the destruction of all the institutions that are for the benefit of the people. This has REPEATEDLY been the case throughout history - but you do not learn from history, you are an ignorant sot without a conscience, why don't you just off yourself and decrease the surplus population.

  19. Oh, and by the way, you still do not address the problems of women in India. Do you want me to unfold this like I have in the past? I can lay it bare. Now couple with this your "national security state," when India does not even take care of its own and all of the ills go on steroids. For those who would like to know what is going on in India, even as it approaches a national security state, think of how the pain of the people will multiply with this full blow monstosity in place by what is currently taking place -

It is interesting that I have Indian people all around me in the USA, they are losing jobs in record numbers. When I approach them and ask them what they are going to do ther is never and option of going back to India, why? Shall I write what they have told me Anand?

If it weren't for the Takfiri, there wouldn't be a need for "National Security States."

Oh, here is your proof folks - all the security is because of the "takfiri," which is code for Muslims.

Any country which breaks away from the global junta is stepping in the right direction, I like what is taking place south of the border.  I do not believe in the Hegelian government, all it is for is a franchise of the elite, participatory government of the people is the only way to move forward.

Anderson has done extensive research in India, and says the numbers beg the question of exactly how many deaths were so-called "kitchen fires" – often used to mask dowry-related killings, the result of a new bride being tortured by her new family until her parents pay their debts.” </span>

  31. V, the percentage of elderly as a ratio of the overall population does affect how the elderly are treated. In traditional societies, the more chidren and grandchildren there are, the better off . . . generally speaking . . . the grandparents are.
