Marion, there are two to three million Iranian Americans. More than a million live in LA. Beverly Hills is one fifth Iranian American. Iranians are one of the richest and most influential minorities inside the US. Many Americans have Iranian friends. This is why so many Americans feel empathy for Iranians.

Why do you choose to call the Iranian security forces a fascist armed militia vza? Can you tell me for a fact that all of the protestors been peaceful? Can you tell me for a fact that all of the Iranian security forces have been beating, killing, and imprisoning protestors?
ReplyDeleteLook I support peaceful protests, but in this case I am very suspicious of these protests when I consider what has been taking place leading up to these protests, how they unfolded, and I am suspicious as to who ALL are behind organizing them...
I do not believe that they happened spontaneously, although there may have been people who took part in them spontaneoulsy...I think they were organized well in advance...
I am always reminded that the hispanic (or spanish descent - white) population of the southern continent is still to this day very racist against the indigenous population. I have a lot of south americans in the classes I teach and I was shocked when one of my pupils (a white peruvian) referred to certain people of color as "mokeys". That wasn't probably as shocking as the indifference demonstrated by the rest of the class to what the student had said. This is why I always tend to give indigenous leaders (like Evo Morales) the benefit of the doubt (rightly or wrongly). After all, these were the people who this land belonged to and they were defeated and humiliated.

No Marion, it does not prove anything. It merely supports your opinion. Which is fine with me, btw. That is why we are all here...to express our opinions. So I think the Basjiis are fascist militias and you don't. Based on their history and from what I have read, that is the conclusion I have come to.

Well, really, how on earth is one supposed to answer questions like that? Who said ALL about anything happening in Iran, Marion? That would be impossible. Most observers from a wide range of sources have indicated that most of the protestors have been peaceful. Is it possible that some have used violence? You bet. Is it possible that some of the security forces have reacted to violence? Yes. But it has also been reported...from Iranians...that innocent people have been attacked, beaten, killed, and imprisoned.

This has been documented again and again and if you deny this then we have nothing more to discuss. There is NOTHING you could tell me about a regime that does that sort of thing that could possibly bring me to view it with any sympathy. EVER. Rhetorical question to enliven the thread: Building on an unrelated news item Molly introduced further up, can someone explain to me why there isn't a similar or greater outrage in the western press for what is happening in the Peruvian Amazon? Twice the number of people (in this case, indigenous people) have been killed in Peru fighting for their lands than have reportedly been killed on the streets of Iranian cities. Any mention in the western press? Hardly.

These are after all Peruvian indigenous peoples that should have died and faded away after Europeans took their lands in search of our joint "manifest destiny." Why can't they sit quietly and defeated on their reservations and dedicate their wretched lives to gambling? And if that isn't enough reason to ignore them, then I'm sure that if we dig deeper, we will find that buffoon Chavez funding them with his oil money from Venezuela. After all, Chavez would like nothing more than to discredit an elected leader sympathetic to the west that wants to raise the standard of living of his countrymen by encouraging such noble western investments in virgin Amazon soils.

ReplyDeleteThe story has been in all of my papers and on the cable networks. There are American groups speaking up for them, too. A balanced compromise, taking in the needs and common good of the nation and the rights of the people should be sought.
Btw, we are all, including you and all of your relatives, residing on what was once virgin soil. We are all living with comforts and medicines provided by the exploitation of natural resources from lands once or currently inhabited by indigenous people. When you renounce all that, do let us know.
