Kyrgyzstan cops use attack dogs on protestors

During the US Civil Rights Movement, police frequently & indiscriminately used attack dogs along with water cannons & clubs against unarmed protestors. The hard-fought battles of that movement helped end the use of such weapons against protestors in the US but now again water cannons & clubs are de rigueur cop equipment around the world. This, however, may be the first instance of using attack dogs on protestors: in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, cops & dogs guard a government building against 1,000 protestors demanding nationalization of a gold mine. Once again, hard-fought battles are required to win the democratic right to protest without fear of violence. (Photo by Vladimir Voronin/AP)
