May Day 2012: a time to commit to ending child labor
International Labor Day 2012 & this young boy, a migrant from India, works at a brick factory in Nepal as part of a seasonal work migration. Brick kilns emit toxic fumes & particulates causing serious health problems, including to eyes, lungs, & throat. These pollutants (including carbon monoxides) are known to stunt the mental & physical growth of children. Thousands of kilns are set up with no labor standards & no environmental controls at all when studies show the toxic fumes contaminate crops & plants adjacent to brick fields & cause deforestation since wood is used to fire the kilns. On this day to honor working people our commitment should be to find a way to end the abomination of child labor & return our little brothers & sisters to the schools & playgrounds where they belong.
