When is war justified? Afghanistan-9/11?
Every war begins with a lie. In addition to Saddam = WMD, I'm old enough to remember the Gulf of Tonkin resolution authorizing the war in Vietnam, based on a fictional Vietnamese gunboat attack on our Navy. (White House recordings have Lyndon Johnson gloating privately, "Hell, those damn stupid [US] sailors were just shooting at flying fish.")

Spot on Molly.. That was one of the biggest lies in human history..It was the starting point for one of the most barbaric war ever..When I became aware of this fact, apart from the nausea I felt, the whole picture took a different look to my eyes and I started to see everything the US does with great suspicion, to put it mildly..
ReplyDeleteOff topic, but looks interesting, Tgia!
ReplyDeleteNow Greenaway turns to the Golden Age of Dutch painting. <span>Rembrandt’s J’Accuse is a study of that painter’s most famous work, The Night Watch, and though it certainly is a study, it is also--or primarily--a fascinating film. Greenaway has a thesis, possibly stated previously in the mountain of publications about Rembrandt. The painting, familiar to millions, shows a group of civilian militiamen in Amsterdam rousing to an alarm. Greenaway’s film sets out to prove that the painting is really an exposé of a murder--of one officer by another. Twenty points, all visual, are made to support this thesis.</span>

Thanks vza, I'll have a look.
ReplyDelete"I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents." General Butler - War Is A Racket
ReplyDelete"<span style="">Every war begins with a lie.<span style="">" Couldn't disagree more.</span></span>
ReplyDeleteTGIA, the why did the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) invade South Vietnam in 1964? What was South Vietnam suppose to do? Practice Sathya Graha? Serious question.
Not the point, Sorry! The US waged a war of aggression based on a lie..That is the point.

ReplyDelete"Oh it's a mystery to me.
We have a greed, with which we have agreed...
and you think you have to want more than you need...
until you have it all, you won't be free.
Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
When you want more than you have, you think you need...
and when you think more then you want, your thoughts begin to bleed.
I think I need to find a bigger place...
cause when you have more than you think, you need more space.
Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
Society, crazy indeed...
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
There's those thinkin' more or less, less is more,
but if less is more, how you keepin' score?
It means for every point you make, your level drops.
Kinda like you're startin' from the top...
and you can't do that.
Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
Society, crazy indeed...
I hope you're not lonely, without me
Society, have mercy on me.
I hope you're not angry, if I disagree.
Society, crazy indeed.
I hope you're not lonely...
without me."
TGIA, America assisted South Vietnam in defending itself. In my opinion, America shouldn't have promised to defend South Vietnam from external aggression in the first place, but that is neither here nor there.
ReplyDeleteAnother great and meaningful song, thanks V!
