China today: socialist or capitalist?

The privatisation of industry proceeded very rapidly during the 1990s, and continued more slowly thereafter. The state sector's share of industrial production fell from 100% in 1978 to 37.5% in 1999 and 31.6% in 2004. The private sector's share was 62.1% in 2004, while the share of collectively owned enterprises was 4.6%.

  1. China is more capitalist and free market than the borderline socialist country America is becoming.

  2. Exactly how is America becoming "borderline socialist"? Please explain in detail and show your work.

You really live in some alternate universe, don't you?

  3. This is OT but I thought you should all read this excellent essay by longtime pro-Palestinian activist Jeffrey Blankfort, about Noam Chomsky. It's long but well, well worth the read.

Very eye-opening and will definitely change your thinking on many fronts: For instance, I knew that Chomsky had a sympathy for the Zionist project but did not know that he was, in fact, such a staunch Zionist. And while I knew that both Bushes were not as pro-Israel as other presidents have been, I was not aware of the extent to which Bush Sr., especially, tried desperately to bring Israel and the pro-Israel lobby to heel.

Great reading, as I said, long but info-packed and well worth your time:

  4. Bush Senior was the most pro Palestinian US president since Ike. So far Obama hasn't matched Bush Senior, but I hope he will.

DancingOpassum, look at the surging bigoted nativist racist pro sanctions on poor countries movement in America. Look at Lou Dobbs spouting his anti outsourcing, pro protectionist, and anti immigrant nonsense.

    Look at Amy Goodman, Anne Coulter, Jesse Jackson, Gore Vidal, Michael Moore, John Edwards repeating the Lou Dobbs pro sanctions nonsense. {In America its across the political spectrum.}

Look at the ridiculous attempts to stop CNOOC from buying UNOCAL; and to stop the Dubai ports deal. Few things have made me as ashamed of my fellow Americans.

Look at the sanctions imposed on China and many other countries, even under the Messiah.

Look at the way Government spending, non-tariff barriers, corporate regulation, are surging. Look at the intervention in the auto industry (mostly by our borderline socialist president Bush.)

Look at what is happening to the financial system.

If that isn't borderline socialist anti free market, then I don't know what is.

  5. It's about time we became anti-outsourcing and pro-protectionist when it comes to American jobs. That' isn't socialism, though. A lot of countries of varying political persuasion pursue those policies.

And yes, I see what is happening in the financial markets. I see a lot of really rich people getting really, really richer while the rest of us scrap and scrape for every thin dime. I see a country whose every conceivable social safety net has been shredded at the behest, and to the benefit, of those same money-grubbing oligarchs.

I see a country where millions of people have to choose between bankruptcy or death and health care, where millions have no hope of a retirement free of privation and poverty, where 47 million people (according to a recent study) literally go hungry.

Government spending may be "surging" but it's only surging on behalf of mega-corporations and the wealthy. Everyone else is suffering horribly. That reeks of a certain -ism, but not socialism, that's for damn sure.

  6. China - feudalism to barbarism via totalitarianism. Waving red flags and calling people comrade does not constitute socialism. The village idiot of Anandabad thinks socialism is a Tibetan demon.

  7. Dancing, you have no idea how much anti-outsourcing and protectionist rhetoric fuels anti Americanism in the rest of the world. It is by "FAR" the largest single source of anti Americanism in the world. It is also socialist and anti free market. Who the hell is "government" to tell me that I can't buy something from a non American, or that I can't accept investment from a non American. That is tyranny.

It is stunning how so many Americans cavalierly talk about causing suffering to billions of poor people around the world.

  12. Yeah, his screwed-up "knowledge" of politics and economics is...what's the word?...interesting.

China is the worst of both worlds, capitalism and centralist communism - it started and kept the worst of both -

Yup. So far it seems, at least in terms of their economy, to be working for them...but then our Potemkin Village economy seemed to work for us too, for a long time.

The village idiot of Anandabad thinks socialism is a Tibetan demon.

Ha ha ha. Watch out, next he'll be telling us that all the Tibetans need is a good PR firm.
