US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America

From the Caribbean to Brazil, political opposition to US plans for 'full-spectrum operations' is escalating rapidly
By Hugh O'Shaughnessy. The Independent
The United States is massively building up its potential for nuclear and non-nuclear strikes in Latin America and the Caribbean by acquiring unprecedented freedom of action in seven new military, naval and air bases in Colombia. The development – and the reaction of Latin American leaders to it – is further exacerbating America's already fractured relationship with much of the continent.

  1. I think that training South American militaries is a good thing. Brazil and Mexico should handle most of the problems in the region. If anyone messes with them, America should back them.

America doesn't want to be stuck with security responsiblities in Latin America. The only way to do this is to train the South American militaries directly. BTW, US training of the Mexican military and police is popular among Mexicans. What Latin American country doesn't want its military trained by the US?

Brazil and Mexico are starting to step up. Brazil took over the Haiti UN mandated occupation force five years ago. China also contributed occupation troops that fought under Brazilian command in Haiti.

Go Brazil! Go China! Go UN!

  2. Just out of curiosity, Anan, are you aware how many border disputes are simmering throughout the continent (and how many wars have been fought over them)?  I am anti-military, but any reasonable person ought to be against an arms race in the region.

  3. I admire uniformed militaries that protect all of us.

"<span>are you aware how many border disputes are simmering throughout the continent (and how many wars have been fought over them)?</span>" No.

What I support is transnational partnerships between any militaries to solve regional and international problems. Ideally, the US could provide logistics, funding, trainers and advisors, while Brazil, Mexico and other countries provide the muscle.

It is a great relief to Americans that Lula took care of Haiti. I think Americans would greatly appreciate if Brazil would help Mexico deal with their internal challenges.

Why don't you join the armed forces ? they'll give a weapon and you get to kill  etc.. think of all the goodies on offer , depending on how many kids you murder ,you might get a medal and tell Totten about it.
