Another cause of the US deficit is the large number of tax credit and deduction expenditiures in the tax code. The US should move towards a simpler flatter tax code.
By contrast the DoD budget is dropping to 2.5% of GDP under the "hawkish" budget. The Republicans want to slash defense by more. Defense spending isn't nearly as large as health care spending.
