Mondoweiss:'I think this is the most emotional event I've ever done' (Naomi Klein in Ramallah)

Yesterday Naomi Klein gave a great talk at the Friends School in Ramallah. It was a short addendum to her January piece in The Nation supporting the BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) movement against Israel. I recorded it in video, but it came out too shaky, so here's the audio in mp3, 35 min long.

  2. I agree TGIA.  It is interesting that she talks about South Africa apartheid, and makes the comparisons that she does.  I wonder if she knows anything about the close relationship SA had to Israel, maybe she does.  One thing is for sure she is on the boycott trail in earnest.

  3. If you want to talk about apartheid, then I'm game:

    * "Infidels" can't even VISIT Mecca or Medina:

    * When the Muslims ruled OUR land, Jews were forbidden from entering the tomb where OUR ancestors are buried in Hebron.

    * When Muslims ruled OUR land, Jews were forbidden from visiting OUR holies site, the Temple Mount.

    * In fact, when the Arabs occupied Judea, samaria, and Gaza in 1948, they ethnically cleansed ALL Jews, and now claim that Jews can't live here: THAT is apartheid.

    * Everywhere in their lands, we find mosques built on the ruins of synagogues and churches:

The Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque are built on top of Judaism's holiest sites on the Temple Mount.

The mosque in Hebron is built on top of the burial site of Judaism's forefathers and mothers, the Tomb of the Patriarchs, in Hebron.

Just like the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is built over a Byzantine church and to this day contains a shrine said to contain the head of John the Baptist.

Just like the Hagia Sophia church in Istanbul, which was made into a mosque and now a museum.

Just like the Arap Camii Mosque in Istanbul, which was originally the Dominican Church of Saint Paul.

Just like the Fethiye Mosque, Mosque of the Conquest, which was originally the Church of the Blessed Virgin, and was the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate from 1455 to 1591 (after the church at St. Sophia had been converted into a mosque).

Just like the Imrahor Mosque, originally a church built in 1264, which was turned into a mosque in 1500.

Just like the Mosque of Roses, which was originally the Church of St. Theodosia.

Perhaps quid pro quo is the way to go- eh?

We won't allow that apartheid fanaticism here in OUR land.

  4. Only one problem.  Palestinian land is not your land.

"Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you because geography books no longer exist. Not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either. Nahlal arose in the place of Mahlul; Kibbutz Gvat in the place of Jibta; Kibbutz Sarid in the place of Huneifis; and Kefar Yehushua in the place of Tal al-Shuman. There is not a single place built in this country that did not have a former Arab population." Moshe Dayan, address to the Technion, Haifa, reported in Haaretz, April 4, 1969.

  5. APARTHEID ISRAEL : TWO WALLED CITIES

The logic of both Israel and apartheid-era South Africa can be found in their common origins as settler states. In both cases, the settlers CREATED MYTHS, semi-religious or explicitly religious, including that GOD HAD PROVIDED THE LAND for them and that the land was unoccupied upon arrival, a very, very common theme in every settler state, whether it's the United States, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. In both cases, the settlers portrayed themselves to be VICTIMS against natives who were described as SEMI-BARBARIC OR INTOLERANT. Given the permanent state of siege, every settler state AGGRESSION came to be DESCRIBED as a DEFENSIVE ACT, an approach also common with the United States. By way of example, for South Africa, incursions into Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe or anywhere else always against alleged TERRORISTS were justified as alleged defensive actions.
