Tel Aviv (PNN) 5 July -- As the Freedom Flotilla II approaches, Israeli not-for-profit organization Gisha warns that activists' focus on humanitarian aid is not the root source of Gaza's problems. It is economic stagnation rather than lack of food that is causing the residents misery. Israel's continued ban on exports, construction materials, and travel between Gaza and the West Bank contradicts the 2010 Israeli government decision to facilitate economic recovery in Gaza. Gisha cites data from the Palestinian Federation of Industries at least 83% of Gaza's factories are either closed or working at a capacity of 50% or less. The Israeli ban on export cripples the manufacturing sector; not a single truck has been allowed to leave Gaza since May 12. The extent to which Israel seeks a full restriction on Gaza is evidenced by the complete ban on goods destined for Israel and the West Bank; Gisha notes that prior to 2007, 85% of the goods leaving Gaza were sold to Israel and the West Bank.

200 percent agree. Trade not aid. The flotillas are misguided. Rather Gaza needs to be admitted into the WTO and get free trade agreements with Brazil, America, Europe, Russia, India, South Korea, China, Japan, Turkey, Indonesia, Israel etc.
ReplyDeleteThere needs to be free trade and free investment throughout the world, including with Gaza, Israel and the West Bank.
Israel's stupid policies standing in the way of it does enormous harm to Israeli interests. Imagine how much more successful Israeli Venture Capital and startups would be if Gazans were freely allowed to work in, invest in, and create Israeli startups.
Gaza seems to naturally be a trading hub. Imagine all the biofuels Gazan scientists and technologists can invent.
US state is against the flotilla, Israeli ethnic cleansers against the flotilla. So who else will be peddling the anti-flotilla line? Oh, hello, Bahinchot.

ReplyDeletemorons, palestine is not short on food. I've been. they have food. the flotilla scheme is simply a ploy to curry European favor and get the allegiance of dupes who don't know any better. Israel won the six day war when 5 Arab armies invaded. Arabs were mostly told to leave by their own leaders. Even the then king of Jordan agrees on this. accept a state next to the Jews you despise. and deal with it.

TGIA, they support a Palestinian state, albeit a tiny one that they nickel and dime. Hopefully a Palestinian state gives Israel tens of billions of dollars in grants :)
