Air strikes and artillery barrages have taken a heavy toll among the most vulnerable of the Iraqi people, with children and women forming a disproportionate number of the dead. Analysis carried out for the research group Iraq Body Count (IBC) found that 39 per cent of those killed in air raids by the US-led coalition were children and 46 per cent were women. Fatalities caused by mortars, used by American and Iraqi government forces as well as insurgents, were 42 per cent children and 44 per cent women.

Tuba kids walking back home from school- A recent CPT report and public call

Of utmost concern for CPT and Operation Dove is the safe travel of Palestinian school children who walk from the nearby villages of Tuba and Magaher-al-Abeed to At-Tuwani’s elementary school. These school children face a treacherous daily walk past the illegal Israeli settlement of Ma’on and the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on. For years, armed adult settlers have attacked, threatened and harassed the children along the path from Tuba to Tuwani. In 2004 the Knesset recommended that the Israeli military provide the children with an armed escort. However, since settlers constructed a gate across the road one year ago, the escort soldiers have refused to walk with the children far enough to ensure their safety.
In the past two weeks internationals working with Operation Dove and Christian Peacemaker Teams have twice witnessed settlers grazing sheep directly in the path of the children at the time they walk home from school. Because the children have been physically attacked in the past, and threatened with death by settlers earlier this school year, they are terrified by the presence of these settlers. Since an incident on March 24 in which settlers were present at the end of the children’s walk home, internationals and the children have repeatedly asked the soldiers to walk with the children until they are out of danger. On April 1 settlers again came onto the land between the outpost of Havat Ma’on and the village of Tuba while the children were walking. Members of CPT and Operation Dove were present and the children ran towards them crying and very frightened.

The Israeli military kidnaps four civilians and attack kindergarten near Hebron

Local sources said Israeli troops invaded the village of Beit Ruosh, near Hebron, and searched homes. Troops left the village after kidnapping four teenagers. Another force attacked the village of Saffa, where troops searched homes, storming and ransacking a local kindergarten. The villagers said Israeli troops removed a Palestinian flag on the roof of the kindergarten before leaving.

The factors that cause death and injury to women in the West and East are the same: but the Western media are oblivious of the factors in the West. They think that they are free and equal.

Egypt and Nasrallah

Yasmina can you get some information to us from your family? If they do feel safe having those talks on the phone with you about the popular mood in Egypt today?
In case some people Missed my posts about this in the days before there was some member of Hezbollah that got arrested in Egypt a few days ago, they are trying to arm the Palestinian resistance so that they have some weapons to fight back instead of just getting killed by the Israelis like the sheep.
Now Mubarak declared war on Nasrallah and I dont see how this will go according to that cow's plan.
The popular sentiment in every Arab country, including those countries that we can accuse of harboring some anti-shiite sentiment is a sentiment of pride and respect for the Sayyed.
These feelings are not suddenly going to change because Mubarak wants. People will be able to see passed all these lies of Mubarak and I dont think in the end that they will turn against Nasrallah.
Right now Nasrallah is recieving full support and solidarity from the leader of the Ikhwan and even if you dont support those guys politics it is still signigicant because they Own the Streets in Egypt.
So Mubarak is going to use this as an opportunity to go against: Nasrallah, Hamas and the Brotherhood in Egypt? I dont see how someone who is viewed as being the most pro-American and pro-Israel can possibly go against the Muqawama Islamiyeh in Lebanon and Palestine and against the strongest political and religious force in Egypt.
Mubarak is a delusional cow and collaborator. This is the end of his Regime to. The Israelis already said that they Only support Mubarak and his sons as the rulers of Egypt so I wonder for how long the Egyptian people can put up with this. I included a good article below that shows the where the Egyptian people are economically, what the hell did they get because there leader is in bed with the Americans and Israelis? Nothing. Maybe they got a little bit more bread and ful, enough to keep them full enough without making a rebellion but not enough to keep them sedated forever.

Playwright David Hare on 'the hideous wall'

I read David Hare's "monologue" on the Wall on the train just now, and I can't say enough good things about it. First of all, it's great that the New York Review of Books is publishing a forceful piece from Israel/Palestine and making the Wall iconic. Especially after the publication went AWOL for Gaza. Second, the tone and manner of the piece are odd/lovely/original. Sort of an oral performance piece as journalism. Ragged but very real-feeling, you are there. The best thing about the piece, though, is the way it contrasts high-minded discussions that journalists always have with authors and intellectuals in cafes and backyards in Israel, with very vivid experiences of the occupied territories. Hare is truly interested here not in ideas but in experience, of knowing for a little while what occupation is like.

Report: The Israeli occupation even executes the animals of Gaza

One story that the media have not reported is what Zionist forces did to animals. They destroyed a number of zoos in the Gaza Strip, which are the second recreational outlet for its bereaved families and children after the first natural outlet, the beach. Walzer wakes up and smells the white phosphorus

Report: 437 children killed, 1872 injured in Israel's offensive

The Ministry of Social Affairs in the Gaza Strip reported that the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip left 1346 children orphaned, 437 dead and 1872 wounded. The army killed 1434 Palestinians, including 960 civilians, during the war on Gaza. Among the slain residents were 437 children under the age of 16, 110 women, 123 elderly, 14 physicians and medics, and four journalists. Thousands of children are suffering from psychological and emotional problems caused by the shelling and the scenes of death and destructions they witnessed.

Egypt and Israel: The enemy of my enemy is my friend

In an editorial published in the Egyptian daily El Gomhoria, Ali Ibrahim wrote that "Nasrallah is worse than Israel since he is trying to hurt the livelihood of the same Egyptians who supported him during the Second Lebanon War." But many Egyptians are not buying it. "Hassan Nasrallah is a hero. He is the only Arab leader who stood up against Israel. Hosni Mubarak is a corrupt U.S. puppet," I was told by a Cairo-based journalist on condition of anonymity.
During a recent demonstration in Cairo, several people carried Nasrallah's pictures. His pictures can also be seen in coffee shops, stores and on car windows in Egypt. His name is chanted during anti-Israeli protests.

Palestine: Gaza mom back in the US

The saga of Palestinian blogger and mother Laila El-Haddad and her two children has come to a complete circle - she is back in the US, where she started her long trek to Gaza, Palestine, three days earlier, after the Egyptian authorities denied her from reaching home. The journalist, who blogs at Raising Yousuf and Noor: dairy of a Palestinian mother, flew into the Cairo International Airport, Egypt, where she was hoping to cross the Rafah Crossing, on the Egyptian-Palestinian border, to meet up with her parents in Gaza. The crossing was closed and the Egyptian authorities turned her back - after making her wait and interrogating her for 36 hours.

45 Palestinians expelled from East Jerusalem

RAMALLAH: Israeli authorities deported 45 Palestinians from the western part of East Jerusalem’s neighborhood of Beit Hanina to the eastern one, which locates behind the separation wall. Sources close to Al-Radaydeh family told the official Palestinian news agency (WAFA) that the family members were deported from Nusseibeh area in Beit Hanina, which is under Israeli jurisdiction, to the one currently in the West Bank. The sources said that the deportation included the parents of “martyr” Mar’i Al-Radaydeh, his brothers, their children and other relatives.”

Dutch: Netanyahu government not a government of peace, must impose sanctions

The Netherlands must impose economic sanctions against Israel if the new government in Jerusalem thwarts the peace process with the Palestinians, the Dutch Labor party said last week.
Labor's Martijn van Dam... went on to call Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman "an extremist who is on the brink of racism," adding: "This is not a government with much prospect for peace."

Christian Peacekeeping Team: Masked settlers attack three Palestinian women in south Hebron hills
Bethlehem - Ma’an - The Christian Peacemaker Teams in Hebron reported that three women were attacked by masked Israeli settlers Friday near their Bedouin village of Umm Al Kher, south of Yatta.
According to the report, the women were tending their sheep, grazing in a nearby valley, when masked men attacked them with wooden sticks. When the women began to flee, the men threw rocks at them until they were out of reach.
CPT said one woman was hospitalized following the incident.
Members of CPT maintain a constant presence in Hebron and the neighboring village of At-Tuwani where they observe and provide international protection to Palestinians.

Israeli settlers attack Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance in the old city of Hebron
Hebron- Ma’an - A group of Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance in the old city of Hebron Saturday afternoon, causing damage to the vehicle.
The ambulance was moving a patient from the Hebron governmental hospital to her home in Ash-Shuhada Street when the attack occurred, Head of Ambulance and Emergency Services for the Red Crescent Abed Al-Haleem Al-Ja’afra said. The Israeli army was aware that the ambulance would be crossing the normally closed area, and had okayed the move.
As the ambulance arrived to the Al- Qarantina area, the soldiers opened the checkpoint allowing the vehicle into the area where it was attacked by settlers who pelted stones on the vehicle.
“The vehicle was ambushed, and the soldiers turned a blind eye to the incident, making no move to stop the settlers from throwing stones,” Al-Ja’afra said.

Its great to see that Mubarak has no shame. Yasmin, come back. I'm really not a orientalist. I understand why Arabs get mad when westerners are always judging them. I would, too. I know there are people that can be legitimately called Orientalist. It's just that occasionally the term can be overused. Like when my husband was in college, he felt every time he said anything critical of his own community (being a Muslim raised in the ME), he was told not to be "orientalist". The study of the ME, instead of being about honest scholarship was used as a political football. One must not criticize the ME because it would hurt the fight against Israel and American imperialism. Figures compiled by Dirasat, a Nazareth-based organisation monitoring education issues, show 5,400 Arab students from Israel are at Jordanian universities – half the number of Arabs studying in Israel itself.
Despite the fact that most Israeli Arab students in Jordan interviewed by the researchers expressed a preference to attend university in Israel, the numbers heading to Jordan have grown four-fold since 2004.
College-age Arabs, representing nearly one-quarter of their age group in Israel, are heavily under-represented in Israeli higher education, at about eight per cent of the student intake, according to official statistics. Of those Israelis who pass their matriculation exams, three times as many Jews as Arabs are accepted into Israeli universities.
“Our findings should raise serious questions about the hurdles that have been put in the way of Arab students that make them feel they have no choice but to study abroad,” said Yousef Jabareen, a law professor at Haifa University and head of Dirasat.

Christian Peacemaker Teams: Israeli soldiers abduct children, deliver them to settlers for beating

Hebron - Ma’an/Agencies - Israeli soldiers delivered three Palestinian children to masked settlers who then beat them near the south Hebron Hills on Sunday, a group of Christian Peacemaker Teams living in the area reported.

According to the group soldiers seized three boys, aged ten, 11 and 14, at four o’clock on Sunday and transported them to the Ma’on settlement near Hebron.

An Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush, the former US president, has had his sentence reduced from three years to one, a court spokesman has said.

Violence from illegal Israeli settlers directed at Palestinian residents in Hebron is an almost everyday occurrence. Recently however, several incidents indicate that settler violence in the city is increasing. On the 4th of April at around 3pm, Shah Aiwa, a 7-year-old Palestinian boy, was injured in his head after having stones thrown at him by settler children. The stoning occurred near the boy’s home in the old city, next to Beit Romano settlement. Shah was playing with another child when two settler boys started throwing stones at them from a nearby roof. According to both Shah and eyewitnesses who gathered at the scene, incidents like this are very common, happening 5 to 6 times a week. The stone that hit Shah on the head weighed over a kilo, and the injury he received required attention by medical staff from Hebron hospital.

In Gaza, farming under fire

KHAN YOUNIS, occupied Gaza Strip (IPS) - "They're always shooting at us. Every day they shoot at us," says Alaa Samour, 19, pulling aside his shirt to show a scar on his shoulder. Samour said he was shot on 28 December last year by Israeli soldiers positioned along the border fence near New Abassan village, east of Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip.

"We were cutting parsley like we do almost every day, and the soldiers began shooting. We started crawling away. When I got out of the line of fire I realized my shoulder was bleeding and that I had been shot."

Sheikh Jarrah residents organize in the face of mass house evictions

Nonetheless, Ruba Masrouji, from the city of Ramallah, has become the first female head of a brokerage company in Palestine. “The road to success was a difficult one. It was hard for many men to put up with a female presence in business, but now I can say I deserved it,” Ruba said.
