Manaqeesh (with the extra, veggies) : Arabic pizza..

I saw this photo today and it instantly made my eyes wet (not to mention my mouth). This is Arabic (Lebanese/Palestinian/Syrian etc.) manqoosh/manouch (plural manaqeesh/manaeesh). Traditional dough with Za'tar, sesame seeds. The extra not always on the menu for breakfast, tomatoes, black olives, cucumbers and mint. It used to be what we would grab, burning hot, for breakfast (as a roll) in a hurry on the way to school. My regret is that while I can find it in Sydney in many places, I still have to go out of my way to buy it. Yeah, I know, life is unfair, but that's neither an excuse nor a consolation. :(

If you've got a grill or a grill is part of your stove than you're there. Some lebanese bread split in a half sprinkled with Z'atar , olive oil , a pinch of salt under the grill for few minutes et voila.

I used to make them when i was a kid. In Sydney there is "Baalbak" they make delicious varieties .

BTW Aleppo ( Syria) is the best place on the planet for Manquoush.

  2. Wow VA! I never tried that and I'm starting straight away, thanks. Lucky I have some Za'tar left I suppose.
Last time I visited Alepp, looks like it was in another life, I tasted many things all heavenly delicious but I don't remember eating any manaqeesh. I may go back for one..

  3. Done, but I think I left it a bit too long on the grill and the bread is too brittle now but not burnt. It was so quick though. It really shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes. Also I didn't have all the works, just tomatoes, olives, and mint but it still tastes good. Thanks again. You saved my life, hehe.

  4. Also the secret is in the Za'tar itself. There are shops in Sydney selling the real Za'tar Halabi.(Aleppo).

  5. My second attempt. Pulled it out too early but still good. That's it, I'm addicted and would need more za'tar. I buy it from Lebanese shops in Bankstown. Should be the real McCoy, no?
