Bradley Manning Faces Life Sentence, While Criminals WikiLeaks Exposed Have Suffered No Consequences - Glenn Greenwald

We speak with constitutional lawyer and Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald about the military pretrial hearing now underway for alleged U.S. Army whistleblower Bradley Manning, who has been accused of releasing classified U.S. documents to WikiLeaks. Greenwald comments on the possible strategy being put forth by Manning’s defense. "All the Manning [tribunal] hearings have been shrouded in secrecy," Greenwald says, noting there may be more transparency in Guantánamo detainee hearings than there has been for the Manning tribunal. "Presumably, his lawyer believes that one of the best ways that they have to keep him out of prison for the next six decades is to argue that he had diminished capacity by virtue of emotional distress over the gender struggles that he had over his sexual orientation being in a military that had a policy of banning those who were openly gay. "

  1. Bradley Manning should get life imprisonment. He engaged in evil.

  2. Yeah, and so far evil is winning.  Did you see the footage of the US personnel killing unarmed civilians and journalists, and firing on children?  When will their trial be/

  3. Is there a link to this footage. I have not heard about it.

There is footage of battles during which civilians and journalists get killed. But that isn't the same thing. During battles between anti GIRoA militias and the ISF/MNF-I, civilians should stay indoors or away from the neighborhood and not return until the battle ends.

If journalists stay in the area, they are likely to be mistaken as combattants by the militias, ISF and MNF-I. Large cameras are easily mistaken for rifles, RPGs, etc. from a distance.

Are you refering to the two Al Jazeera journalists who were embedding with a sectarian Shiite militias in Baghdad in July, 2007. [Militia that were attacking the Iraqi National Police 3 blocks away from the footage in question.]

This illegal militia was a "special group" who were dishonering Sayyed Muqtada Al Sadr's good name [Sadr had ordered a seizefire] by firing on the Iraqi National Police in that neighborhood. They were taking orders from Khamenei.

By this time the Iraqi resistance [with a Sunni Arab face] had been mostly defeated. However Khamenei was still ordering attacks against Sunni Arabs. Sadr ordered his nominal "followers" to stop taking orders from Khamenei, stop fighting the resistance, ISF, MNF-I; and stand down. This would enable the ISF [de facto assisted by MNF-I] to eliminate the remaining extremist Shiite militias [death squads] and remaining resistance pockets. Sadr strongly praised the Iraqi Army at that time.

The two journalists in question were walking with a group of fighters, at least two of which were carrying rocket launchers. They seemed to be walking towards the battle 3 blocks away. Likely to engage the Iraqi National Police and MNF-I. A helicopter thought they were attempting to encircle the good guys and attack their flanks.

I praise Maliki for being willing to go after the Shiite extremists. By this time they had become a much larger threat that the mostly defeated Al Qaeda and Saddamists. While it is true that the Government of Iraq had allowed these Shiite extremists to attack the resistance in 2004 and 2005, that was no longer true by 2007.

  5. Hezbollah and Iran were also furious at Wikileaks. As was Putin, Lebonon, China and many other countries.

  9. Yes, that  is the incident, though I believe they may have worked for Reuters.
If this supposed militia was attacking police three blocks away, shouldn't the US helicopter have been firing at them and not these journalists? I don't buy your large cameras are easily mistaken for rifles theory.  Inept as we may be, I think our gunners are better trained than that.  If not, please get them out of the air!
I'll bet you think the drone strikes are a great thing too.

  10. I saw the entire more than 40 minutes video and some related videos. To me it looked as if two of the fighters accompanying the two journalists were carrying rocket launchers. That is what I thought. Others who viewed the tape thought similarly.

I think the attack on the group of fighters and the two journalists with them isn't controvertial. The issue that is more contrivertial is the bombing of the van afterwards.

  11. Strange how the bahinchot is never able to find any evidence that exposes him as a liar and a partisan of war criminals. And of course finding any evidence that he's not lying is out of the question.
Any sign of that dodgy Haqqani dossier?
