Stop the press! This is so beautiful..Lebanese group Mashrou' Leila

Mashrou' Leila, Beirut's favorite indie music septet, released their second music video for "Fasateen," (dresses) a wistful ballad that takes on the institution of marriage. The video, directed by Diane Farah and Jowe Harfouche, depicts the band members deconstructing nuptial symbols and defying the pressure of romantic relationships. The video's set to be broadcast on Lebanese TV stations, and the band is slated to take the stage at the Byblos International Festival on July 9, 2010.

  5. I am glad to learn about this group. Their music is great. They came together at that symbol of evil colonialism, AUB. Here is an article about them:

  6. Thanks for this link. Interesting to learn of their backgrounds. BTW, AUB has produced many of the greatest Arab intellectuals in the 20th century but As'ad's jabs at it stems from the fact that it also had played a part in power politics especially in the 50s and 60s favoring the western view of the debate, sometimes violent and bloody in Lebanon, between left and right. Besides some of its excutives, American,  have openly spoken in favor of Israel..

I know...... as well as educated thousands upon thousands of Arabs through the years. In other words, its existence did a hell of lot more good than not. The professor does more than just  "jab" Tgia. He writes of it with contempt. He had to trumpet the fact that he criticized AUB while speaking at a conference there. Well, big deal. He knows quite well that his speaking out posed absolutely no threat to him professionally or personally. Now, I really would be impressed if he stood before an audience of Islamist fanatics in Pakistan and let them have the full force of his intellect. You know, the place where a group of students murdered their professor for speaking out against the Islamists? Or perhaps he could speak to a gathering of Hamas followers about what  bastards they are to impose even more stress on their people with their ridiculous rules. Now that would be courgaeous.
