Stephen M. Walt: From Washington and Jerusalem: more bad news

Back in 2007, we wrote that AIPAC has an "almost unchallenged hold on Congress." Little has happened since then to alter that conclusion, and we will probably get another demonstration of Congressional spinelessness this week. On Tuesday, the House is scheduled to vote on H.R. 867, an AIPAC-sponsored resolution denouncing the recent Goldstone Report on possible war crimes by Hamas and Israel during the Gaza War last year.

  2. You mean I might read where someone else is of the opinion that we americans are all mindless drones controlled by evil Israeli geniuses....lol

Or that USA policies favor Israel over its/our enemies?  Golly gee what amazing stuff.

The presumption is if only we americans knew "the real truth" we'd become die hard advocates for Palestine and drop Israel like a stone.  Its a total fallacy built on wishful thinking.  Ya'll best go to Plan II, "el pronto"....HAHHAH

  5. Maybe I am looking at this as an American. the US government is greatly influenced by many powerful lobbies (Saudi lobby, China lobby, GM lobby, Automaker lobby, software lobby, biotech lobby, pharma lobby, lawyer lobby, HMO lobby, India lobby, Japan lobby, steel lobby, natural gas lobby, coal lobby, labor union lobby.) AIPAC is only one out of many, and not even close to many other lobbies in power and influence.

    As an American, I am much more concerned about many of the other dangerous lobbies. {I hope the Arabist lobby--which backs the arab dictators--freaks out most of you . . . it should.}

This said, I think the friends of Palestine should establish their own powerful lobby to counter AIPAC.

"When it comes to the Israeli-Arab conflict, the terms of debate are so influenced by organized Jewish groups like AIPAC that to be critical of Israel is to deny oneself the ability to succeed in American politics." - Henry Siegman, former head of the American Jewish Congress

"I've never seen a president - I don't care who he is - stand up to them [the Israelis]. It just boggles your mind. They always get what they want. The Israelis know what's going on all the time....If the American people understood what grip those people have on our government, they would rise up in arms. Our citizens don't have any idea what goes on." - Admiral Thomas Moorer, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

"There have been many personal attacks on us. For example, the Washington Post [owned by Jewish-Graham family - BN] had run four separate pieces on our book and three of the four were harshly negative and a couple of them raised the Anti-Semitism charge quite explicitly - and that's just the Washington Post." - Mearsheimer & Walt, authors of the best seller The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy

I was at a Business Conference recently Many different speakers.  One guest speaker was clearly jewish (by his attired).  Little unusual to see that.  Nevertheless, most of the audience were like me - you know, good ole guys and gals from the south.  He told a stroy about the IDF at the end. that had nothing to do with his talk, but he related back.  Anyway, we all applauded afterwards, with no commands given by our leaders or jewish masters...HAHHAHAH

I asked you to provide a link, a source , a book an article which dismiss the claims of an influence by AIPAC on American foreign policy, you did not answer but resorted to bad caricature..Proof to the contrary are there by the thousands not the least being Walt and Mearsheimer themselves. Stop being a complete idiot!!

Tell me, asshole (to use your term), why do our poor congresspeople cave into these devilish Israelis?  What is it?  It aint just because they have lobbyists.  Hell, child molesters probably have lobbyists.

So what is it that causes our poor congresspeople to act not in their own self interest with Israel?  I think (hope) we all agree mind control isnt really possible.

So do tell.  This should be good. :)

  20. <span><span style="font-family: Tahoma;">"The influence-peddling process works like this. Candidates are summoned for in-depth AIPAC interviews. Those found sufficiently committed to Israel's agenda are provided a list of donors likely to "max out" their campaign contributions. Or the process can be made even easier when AIPAC-approved candidates are given the name of a "bundler."</span></span><span style="font-family: Tahoma;">Bundlers raise funds from the Diaspora and bundle those contributions to present them to the candidate. No quid pro quo need be mentioned. After McCain-Feingold became law in 2003, AIPAC-identified bundlers could raise $1 million-plus for AIPAC-approved candidates simply by contacting ten like-minded supporters. Here's the math:</span> <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">The bundler and spouse "max out" for $9,200 and call ten others, say in Manhattan, Miami, and Beverly Hills. Each of them max out ($10 x $9,200) and call ten others for a total of 11. [111 x $9,200 = $1,021,200.]</span> <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">Imagine the incentive to do well in the AIPAC interview. One call from the lobby and a candidate can collect enough cash to mount a credible campaign in most Congressional districts. From Tel Aviv's perspective, that political leverage is leveraged yet again because fewer than ten percent of the 435 House races are competitive in any election cycle (typically 35 to 50).</span>

  21. <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">"Israelis and pro-Israelis object when they hear that charge. How, they ask, can we so few wield such influence over so many? Answer: it's all in the math. And in the single-issue advocacy brought to bear on US policy-making by dozens of 'domestic' organizations that now compose the Israel lobby, with AIPAC its most visible force.</span> <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">The political math was enabled by Senator John McCain whose support for all things Israeli ensured him the GOP nomination to succeed Christian-Zionist G.W. Bush. McCain's style of campaign finance reform proved a perfect fit for the Diaspora-based fundraising on which the lobby relies. Co-sponsored by Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, this change in federal election law typifies how Israeli influence became systemic.</span> <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">'McCain-Feingold' raised the amount (from $1,000 to $2,300) that candidates can receive from individuals in primary and general elections. A couple can now contribute a combined $9,200 to federal candidates: $4,600 in each of the primary and general elections. Primary elections, usuall low-budget, are particularly easy to sway."</span>

    ReplyDelete
  22. <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">"Importantly for the Diaspora, this change also doubled the funds candidates can receive without regard to where those contributors reside. A candidate in Iowa, say, may have only a few pro-Israeli constituents. When campaign support is provided by a nationwide network of pro-Israelis, that candidate can more easily be persuaded to support policies sought by Tel Aviv.</span> <span style="font-family: Tahoma;">Diaspora-based fundraising has long been used by the lobby with force-multiplying success to shape US foreign policy. Under the guise of reform, John McCain doubled the financial resources that the lobby can deploy to elect and retain its supporters."</span>

  24. Im confused.  Israel needs US tax dollars to survivie.  Otherwise its a failed state, right, soon to be crushed by angry arab hordes.  But yet its supports and peole have billions of OTHER dollars to stuff into the pockets of wicked congresspeople.

This is the arab fantasy.  Its all about the money.  I told you before.  Its not about dollars.  Its because TGIA and his kind are an extremely unlikable bunch with whom we have no sympathy, regard, or any connection whatsoever.  We dont like him or his type.  Its really that simple.

  28. Debate?!! YOU are talking about debate..I took the time to provide you with material with a specific claim ( call it allegations if you will) to which you have nothing but disdain (without reading them to start with!) and without providing any substantiated arguments against! I did not ask you to prove a negative, I asked to show me material which deconstructs the claim and shows where and how it's wrong or false! This is entirely a different game!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. You have demonstrated a total inability to discuss anything in good faith. Your only occupation here is one of mocking, caricaturing and ridiculing whatever is said. You think by simply denying or refuting something it's enough to make it false or wrong and I say not good enough. Sow me why and how it's wrong but you never oblige because you don't give a shit. This is your understanding of a debate and I call it dishonest motherfuckery!! You're not going to have your way my friend..No free rides here!
