Avnery: Abbas feels betrayed. And the traitor is Barack Obama.

MAHMOUD ABBAS is fed up. The day before yesterday he withdrew his candidacy for the coming presidential election in the Palestinian Authority.

I understand him.

He feels betrayed. And the traitor is Barack Obama.

A YEAR ago, when Obama was elected, he aroused high hopes in the Muslim world, among the Palestinian people as well as in the Israeli peace camp.

At long last an American president who understood that he had to put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, not only for the sake of the two peoples, but mainly for the US national interests. This conflict is largely responsible for the tidal waves of anti-American hatred that sweep the Muslim masses from ocean to ocean.

  1. A bull has two horns,  and the American government and the Israeli government have to both be grasped by the horns to steer the bull.  If you grab just one horn you have no leverage.

Unfortunately I think the waves of hatred is what the American government wants,  it helps them get their bogus "war on terror" on.  There is no difference between the Obama and the Bush administration here,  one was rushing toward apocalypse with a frown and the other is walking toward it with a smile.  They will not be satisfied until there is a great conflagration.

  2. "But it is impossible to forgive what is actually happening. Not the scandalous American treatment of the Goldstone report. Not the loathsome behavior of Hillary in Jerusalem. Not the mendacious talk about the “restraint” of the settlement activities. The more so as all this goes on with total disregard of the Palestinians, as if they were merely extras in a musical."

  3. That is precisely what has now happened. Obama has erased the line he himself drew in the sand. He has given up the clear demand for a total freeze.

Which makes him look like a fool.

  4. And that's why I called him a liar.

  6. Many smart people, including in Asia and Europe, are very concerned that the Messiah is exuding weakness. Look at the way Israel is stepping all over him.

If Obama doesn't stand up for himself and America more, others such as the Israelis will keep pushing him around.

Its time for America to stand up for America again.

  8. He's still tougher than the wimp Bush. Bush often came across as a foreign poodle. The chosen one seems more self confident than Bush.

It'a a serious question. Are you one of those who believe Obama is a prophet? I heard someone suggesting this not long time ago..

  10. One wacko told me believed Obama is the "awaited" imam or something!!! WTF?

  11. Wacko is the right word. Obama is a decent man,..unfortunately like almost all of them, he is a politician instead of a leader. I suspect the big honchos and money people in the Democratic base got to him about Israel. It is too sad for words.

  12. VZA, I am hopeful that the "One" will come through at the end of Palestine.

But so far, Obama hasn't shown the backbone that Bush Senior did on Israel. Bush Senior threatened his veto against the US congress, and blocked loan guarantees for Israel until settlements were stopped. Papa Bush supported Labor in an Israeli election to put in power an Israeli government that would stop the settlements. GHW Bush won with respect to Israel. If he had been elected, papa Bush might have forced a settlement to Israel/Palestine in 1993.

  13. Remember that America had a much larger share of global income and wealth in 1992, versus today, as well as greater global influence.

Unfortunately, I don't think America by itself has the power to force Israel to do anything. However, a coalition of many great powers does.

  14. I'd have enormous respect for Obama if he enticed James Baker to take over the negotiations and gave him carte blanche to do what is necessary.

  17. Its a prayer really. I am hoping that "the one" will eventually do the right thing.

My perception is that Obama blinked on Palestine at the moment to get one or two more votes on health care reform. However, once health care is past, I hope Obama will redraw a line in the sand.

Personally, I hope Obama stops appearing weak and feckless by doing things such as erasing lines in the sand.
