When Women’s Sexuality becomes a Social and Political Issue

The family constitutes the fundamental building-block of Palestinian society. Family status is largely dependent upon its honor. Much of the “honor” is determined by the respectability of the women in the family. “Honor killings” can be defined as the execution of a female family member for perceived misuse of her sexuality, is a thorny social, juridicial and political issue.

  1. "The political system seems to be far from having any problem with the issue of “honor killings”. Sometimes, the same PNA is not connected enough with Palestinian society to understand the urgency of this problem. Nary has a politician said a word in defense for all the young women that have been sentenced of death by brothers, fathers or uncles."

What about all the clerics? I am constantly told these honor killings or traditional killings have nothing to do with Islam. If that is true why aren't the clerics condemning these killings from the rooftops?

  2. <p>"Strictly following Shari`a (*), the necessary conditions to inflict this punishment are very difficult; but not even Shari`a is ruling on the “honor killings”. A few weeks ago, 15 years old was killed in Gaza by her brother because he suspected her to be pregnant. The autopsy revealed, instead, a severe stomach problem."

<p>"In Bethlehem, 17 years old disappeared for 4 days from her house and when she came back home her father butchered her. However, the autopsy revealed she was still virgin. Nobody knows what really happened to her in those 4 days, it is possible that the girl could have been arrested at a cheek point or detained for some other reason."

<p>This is really the most profoundly sick and disgusting thing I have read. Imagine growing up KNOWING the men in your family just might kill you if you step out of line in any way and your mom and your aunts just might conspire along with them....and most of your neighbors will know and remain silent if you are killed or buried in the desert. In the 21st century, a stomach problem could cause a stupid, blind, ignorant family to pronounce the death sentence on their  daughter. A brother can rape a sister and SHE is NOTHING except a symbol of a stain on a family's "honor". A 24 year old punk can be given the job of killing an aunt.

  4. Honor killings are a cultural phenomonen, and not an Islamic practice.I have read cases about Christian Arabs, Hindu Indians, etc. practicing honor killings ....

When you have sick countries like Wahhabi Saudi issuing weird fatwas in the name of Islam, you might get easily confused over what is Islam and what isn't though:

And to think I am going to be moving to this Wahhabi prison within the next few months makes me feel sick to my stomach....Hopefully I will not end up in prison there for making anti-Wahhabi comments on the internet or in my emails...

  5. Sorry, Marion. Most honor killings occur among Muslims. Yes, they do happen among other groups. At one time they were fairly common among Sicilians and other Mediterranean people and also in some parts of the Balkans. TODAY, the majority happen among Muslims. That is a fact. Now what are Muslims going to do about it? Continue to mouth the lines that Islam does not sanction this sort of killing and that this is no different from domestic violence? Or are you going to put pressure on your clerics and teachers and demand that Muslims are educated to know that these killings are forbidden and bring the full weight of the community down upon the killers?
The Jordanian Parliament REJECTED stiffer penalties for honor crimes. Reason: UnIslamic! But we are always told that Islam does not condone honor killings but here we have a group of Jordanian lawmakers who do NOT want to severely punish the murderers because it would be unIslamic. HUH?
Denial will not solve the problem or save any lives.

But this sort of thing and cartoons sure gets some riled up but not the butchering of an innocent 15 year old.!
Dozens of cars have been smashed, 14 people injured and 46 arrested in riots by Muslim migrants over the alleged defacing of a Koran by a policeman.
