Al-Qaeda 'faces funding crisis'

Al-Qaeda is in its worst financial state for many years while the Taliban's funding is flourishing, according to the US Treasury.

  1. Osama Bin Laden was declared the emir or head of 15 major global Takfiri militias in 1998. Al Qaeda was only one of them. Some of the other Takfiri extremists who acknowleged OBL as their emir are much better financed than Al Qaeda now is.

The primary Takfiri alliance now is Lashkar al Zil (Shadow Army.)

My guess is that the greatest terrorist threat now comes from Haqqani (and not just because he might have been involved in attacking Mumbai.) Haqqani is big in Pakistan, in Uzbechistan, in Dagastan, among Chechans, in Kashmir, and the central eastern part of Afghanistan. {Haqqani doesn't seem to have much support in Southern Afghanistan.} He seems to have tension with the Quetta Shura Taliban.

Haqqani is a long time close ally of Osama Bin Laden. His fighters and the fighters of his allies, seem to be the highest quality. He specializes in attacks on civilians.

Once source on these alliances is here:

I disagree with portions of it, and might eventually send some detailed comments to the author. I think the piece understates the conflict between Haqqani and Baitellah Massoud's group for example. I also think he exxagerates Khamenei's support for Takfiris that mass murder Shiites. I think Khamenei really is a close friend of Karzai as he frequently claims to be, and doesn't want to double deal him.
