Scandinavian social democracies( Finland top spot) at the top of prosperity index that focuses on economic growth, health and freedom

With the exception of Switzerland, which came in at number 2, Nordic countries dominated the top 5 slots, with Sweden in third place followed by Denmark and Norway.

The top 10 were all also Western nations, with Australia (6th place) and Canada (7th place) both beating the United States, ranked 9th. Britain came in at number 12.

  1. And the world's least prosperous country? According to the Legatum Index, it is <span style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Zimbabwe</span>, with <span>Sudan</span> and <span style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Yemen</span> close runners-up.

  3. Jemmy the index is about prosperity and not quality of life. Maybe this explains that.

  4. Oh dear, I hope fleming's head doesn't explode. Cleanup on aisle 5!!

Ha ha Jemmy...Indeed, I was surprised to see the U.S. so high (I still think the U.K. has to be better than here)...and tgia, the index does include quality of life issues like personal freedom and health...so man, they are really beating the crud out of us.

  5. Just wanted to add, one of Finland's best-known products is the Nokia cell phone, which I can attest is superior to every other. Ask anyone who's owned one.

  6. The Nordic countries have a COMBINED population of approximately 25 million. What would be a disgrace is if they were NOT at the top of the lists. It is both silly and unfair to compare countries with under 10 million citizens with a country such as the U.S. that has well over 300 million.
In fact, the Nordic countries SHOULD be paradise for everyone who lives there. As of 2008, Norway's population was about 5 MILLION!

  7. Bring back the city states - I'm with you on that, vza. It's about time someone came up with a plan to carve up that dinosaur the USA, China too. After all it worked with Yugoslavia -didn't it?
