  3. Molly, what to say. All internal security in Iraq is the responsibility of the ISF. I have confidence in their ability to defend Iraq, and defeat Al Qaeda linked networks. This latest attack doesn't change this assesment.

An Iraqi from Basrah informed me about it. Many Iraqis are very sad. Many are angry. Many are blaming the Iraqi Army and PM Maliki for not protecting them. I guess this is natural.

Flemming, a lot of American blood and treasure has gone into training the ISF. They are America's long term legacy in Iraq, much as the South Korean military is America's long term legacy in South Korea. This is why your criticism of the ISF is puzzling. Whether you like it or not, Iraqis are sacrificing and dying to protect you and your family from Al Qaeda linked networks. If these Al Qaeda types were not fighting Iraqis, they almost certainly would be attacking other countries, and eventually the US.

Would it hurt you to express a little gratitude and appreciation to Iraqis and the ISF?

  4. Anand, your absurdity knows no bounds.  Ask the ISF. Is your job protecting americans from Al Queda.  What will they say????

They will say their job is protecting their own people - which they are not doing a very good job of it, I might add - not protecting americans.  They would laugh in your face at the question.

Anand, americans have ZERO fear of a conventional attack by alqueda.  They dont have the capability to even get here, much less attack us.  Beyond their own borders their only weapons are stealth by non-conventional means.  This is completely unrelated to what is happening in Iraq.   The idea that AQ could even get a few soldiers ashore, in uniform, on US soil, is utterly preposterous.

The only real danger AQ presents to the USA is from WMDs.  The CIA, special forces, state dept, FBI and others are making damn sure they dont get a hold of any of these.

We appreciate any soldiers serving the cause of their country in advancing their own condition in a democratic and free environment.  I do appreciate that.  But as far as "protecting me" from al queda, dont be absurd.  Our brave men and women are doing 99.9% of that work, whether in uniform or out.
