Up to a million people protest in Spain against attacks on working people

Yesterday, half a million (some estimate one million) protestors across Spain answered the call of union federations & gathered in 50 cities to oppose the government’s attacks on labor rights & social welfare programs. The Partido Socialista Obrero EspaƱol is the Spanish political cousin of the French Socialist Party that chose the head of the IMF for its presidential candidate (until he was accused of rape). The socialists were overwhelmingly trounced by Spanish voters in November for going along with IMF attacks on working people & were replaced by the conservative Partido Popular government. It would be an understatement to say working people have a crisis of leadership more serious than the oligarchs. Millions of people have shown the political energy & will to do battle to defend & advance the rights of working people but our leadership has divided loyalties. A new leadership is being forged in these battles. (Photo by Manu Fernandez/AP)
