I wish these artists would come out and say, "Because I will not legitimise the apartheid state."

No, they prefer to look stupid or devious.
Cassandra Wilson is a big favourite of mine and I'm glad she's given the ethnic cleansers the elbow, but all the prevarication and now yes, now no business isn't very edifying.
Let's hope it's agents or management who place these artists in an invidious position, and that their personal response would be less ambiguous.
