Director talks of 'responsibility' to tell story of Middle East conflict in film Miral, told through eyes of two Palestinian women. The American artist and film-maker Julian Schnabel said he felt a "responsibility" as a Jew to tell the story of Palestine when he opened his new movie at the Venice film festival. Schnabel's film Miral, competing with 22 others for the Golden Lion award, brought a note of seriousness to an event that sometimes veers towards the frothier side of culture.

I remember Schnabel as a painter in the 80s and an abominable one at that. Maybe one of the worst I've EVER seen. Sloppy, hypish, technically challenged and aesthetically impaired. (see one here) But not surprisingly as it was the trend then he was immensely successful and any of his paintings would fetch tens of millions at that time (I've been told they go for peanuts now but that could be an exaggeration).. But then he started making films, one on artist Jean-Michel Basquiat which was a good movie (with David Bowie as Warhol) and then he followed with other highly praised and awarded films. I'm glad to see he found the right path not only artistically but also politically..
