Americans are worrying themselves sick about the risk Israelis getting killed by American arms because as we know, an Isrtaeli life is more important than any other life on earth, including an American one, as we saw from the Marmara massacre. An Israeli officer was shot by a Lebanese soldier during the tree-cutting incident and Americans went into a tailspin about the possibility that an Americxan supplied rifle "may" have been used. The money that was targetted for US aid to Lebanon was frozen and now Americans are realizing the absurdity of it all. This American concern for poor Israel is nauseating.
ReplyDeleteAll these worries may be for nothing because the Lebanese government is contemplating refusing this aid package because it is already in hot water over the last $800-million or so in aid it has received to date because it had signed security agreements granting the US access to all kinds of Lebanese internal sensitive military and private civillian information in exchange for the aid without having obtained prior Parliamentary approval as required by the Lebanese constitution.
As to the past aid that would give an insight on what the future aid is about, it was comprised mostly of a couple of hundred gas guzzzling Humvees and a couple of hundred of Dodge Chargers for the police force that had been using in most part, WW II Jeeps and Nissan Patrol vehicles. There were also light sidearms and some training provided. All in all, nothing that can cause any harm to Israel but lots of sensitive information that could help it. In short, the US doesn't mind if these light arms and vehicles are used to kill any Lebanese but what it minds is if any are used against Israel. It's a strings attached aid package; many strings.
Iran has offered to provide Lebanon with the modern arms, missiles and training but the pro-US Lebanese government is not confortable with this idea. Hence the reason behind the reactivation of the aid package to Lebanon.
Thanks Walid..You're obviously quite knowledgeable of the Lebanese politics, (among many other politics of course) which are to me is most obscure sometimes. I try to follow every now and then but I've been away too long for my opinion on those matters to be any valuable addition.. Thanks and keep us informed..Also I wish you could provide us some material to post, I trust your opinions are cogent and insightful..
