Report: Robert Gates says U.S. gets zero from Israel

Robert Gates, the now-retired secretary of defense, argued directly to President Obama that Israel is an ungrateful ally, a new report says.

In a meeting of the National Security Council Principals Committee held not long before Gates’ retirement, the former secretary of defense argued that America had taken many steps to guarantee Israel’s security, but had received nothing in return, reports Bloomberg’s Jeffrey Goldberg.

  4. Gates did not  say it when he was retired. The story refers to a meeting Gates had with Obama and other officials and he said it then.

  6. Reminds me of a reply Mitterand gave to a question about class struggle -
    "Class struggle is a reality, but the ruling élite, by an ideological inversion, succeeds in making the dominated classes look like the aggressor."
    That was in a private conversation; in public ... nothing.
