Stone issued an apology on Monday afternoon that read: "In trying to make a broader historical point about the range of atrocities the Germans committed against many people, I made a clumsy association about the Holocaust, for which I am sorry and I regret. Jews obviously do not control media or any other industry. The fact that the Holocaust is still a very important, vivid and current matter today is, in fact, a great credit to the very hard work of a broad coalition of people committed to the remembrance of this atrocity — and it was an atrocity."Read more

Considering that Stone is half-Jewish, his original statement didn't make a whole lot of sense. Is he saying that the world would be a better place if he stopped making movies or if he didn't do the interview where he made this statement? Oh well, it's generally a mistake to put too much importance on something a celebrity says during a promotional tour.
ReplyDeleteOn the substance of what he said: It is probably true that Jews are over-represented in the communications industry and biases, either intentionally or unintentionally color some of their messages. But I am a believer that ultimately you can't keep selling something to people they don't want to buy. And the more rotten things Israel does, the more popular it becomes in the United States. Eventually, we are going to have to face some very serious issues in our culture and stop pretending that the violence, racism, and exploitation in our culture originates right here and not some mysterious or magical outside influence.
