The New York Times reported Monday that the US President, Barack Obama, could condition the automatic US support to Israel with its commitment to halting the construction and expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"could" is the key word here! I'll believe it only when I see it.

What is the constitutional position with regard to this? Could Obama adopt such a policy without obtaining the approval of a legislature packed with Zionist stooges?
ReplyDeleteI doubt it. Too many hurdles. In any case a spokesman for the white house declared later that financial support for Israel is to continue.

ReplyDeleteObama's big issue is his re-election in 2012.
ReplyDeleteIsraeli?Pali "peace progress" won't help him much.
Obama may have noted that Jimmy Carter's much praised Israeli/Egyptian "peace' didn't save Jimmy from being a one term, and out of office president.

"Obama won great support from the American people during the presidential campaign when he said that America must talk to its adversaries, without preconditions. But his administration now puts ridiculous conditions on talking to Hamas: It must recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept previous international agreements. Israel, on the other hand, does not have to recognize Palestine, renounce violence or abide by past agreements. Putting preconditions on just one side of the conflict makes it impossible to move a peace process forward."
Bush senior blocked loan guarantees for Israel and other goodies until Israel banned settlements. Good for Bush Senior!
