"The little Sydney-based pro-Palestine lobby group which I chair called Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine decided we would commission a high class, well-known, opinion poll company to test whether Australia's Labor machine or politicians knew something we didn't -- for example, that their one-sidedness reflected "the will of the people."

I am glad that Australians are turning pro Palestinian.
ReplyDeleteThat patronising expression "the Arab street", employed by the western media to consign public opinion in the Arab nations to the unreasoning reaction of street mobs, can be turned on its head. Here we have the voice of the Australian street, and Professor Ilan Pappé's recently blogged article drew attention to the the British street's denial of the British ruling class's claim to speak for it on Palestine/Israel.
ReplyDeleteThe question of where loyalties lie in the ruling class depends on where the money and the influence is, not where the people stand. In Australia, as well as the rest of the Western nations, these rulers have to brought to the heel of the people. You will not only find the answer to the murderous colonial situation which the Palestinians suffer with there, but the rest of the domestic issues which ail the people (which is also a result of serving the moneyed elite).
