    1. I doubt they even know that a vote is taking place or what the heck they're voting for. Their votes are automatically generated to be in line with the US.

  2. Hi TGIA.

I've been pretty busy for a while so I haven't been able to post for a while. I have sort of a wait and see attitude toward this statehood thing. On one hand, no matter what happens, whether it's a war or some ceremonial handshake, things always turn out the worst possible way for Palestians. Always. The worst possible way. On the other hand, there feels to me be a general movement on a lot of issues lately that would have been considered unthinkable just a few years ago like gay marriage, the war on drugs, which basically boils down to a war on poor people, and the recent hurricane in New York City has put global warming on the front burner. And even though Obama is establishment status quo all the way, don't forget not too long ago Eddie Murphy was making jokes about how ridiculous the thought of having a black man being President of the United States. Are all these changes just isolated events, or do signal a tidal wave of change that will will include Zionism this time? It's kind of like the debate about global warming: isolated events vs massive trends.

I hope to be able to comment more often in the future.

  3. Welcome back Joe
I'm with you on the wait and see attitude. I see a lot of negativity in Abunimah's "this changes nothing" and a lot unrealistic expectations from the side who believes that the recourse to the ICC will change everything. I'd say no one can predict how the new dynamics are going to affect the the outcome. We'll have to wait and see.
I hope to read you soon. You were dearly missed.

  4. I don't see the ICC being relevant. All kinds of international decrees have been made against Israel, and none of them have had any practical results on the ground. I would think that the first order of business would be for a Palestinian government to get real jurisdiction over its recognized borders and have the power to do things like evict hostile squatters and trespassers.

True but that is not a reason to abandon legal approaches altogether. I believe it adds up especially now that the excuse of Palestine not being a state (ICC's given reason) can't be used any more.
For Palestinians to get their own jurisdiction they have to declare the Oslo agreements which allow Israel to be in total control of area C null and void and move on.

  5. I'm not trying to be fractious by posting this link but I think it suggests what we can expect from the ICC in terms of Palestinian justice: http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/5861/

    1. Ehud Olmert one of the chiefs butchers in 2 previous wars (Gaza and Lebanon) where a lot of crimes against humanity took place, is now publicly supporting the upgrade of the Palestinians status thing , one would assume he's a first in a long list of war criminals ripe to be dragged to the hague .He's not even concerned. So yes the ICC isn't beyond the pressure groups

    2. "The ICC based its decision on Palestine not being determined as a state by UN bodies and ICC states, but Amnesty insists the court has ruled in error."
Exactly why they made this bid at the UN this time, Mary. Now that Palestine is an observer state the ICC have no excuse. Well, they have to find one. And this is where, potentially, it's going to be interesting. They'll run out of excuses and would have to do something.
I'm not saying this is going to be the* solution, absolutely not! Nothing should change in the approach taken by the resistance in all its shapes and forms but this is an additional tool that can be and should be used to its full effect. It's a step forward. It's not "nothing" as Abunimah suggested.
