The U.S. military did major damage to the site of one of the wonders of the ancient world while converting it into a base, the United Nations said in a new report.
The site of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was converted into Camp Alpha shortly after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

For two millennia, the ruins have lain on the Euphrates river in modern-day Iraq. Some of the bricks of the ancient ruins still carry the embossed message of King Nebuchadnezzar, inscribed: ‘I am Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the world’. Saddam, as ruler of Iraq, perceived himself to be the heir to Nebuchadnezzar, and manifested the sort of demonic defiance of God exemplified by him. He spent billions of dollars reconstructing Babylon, emulating his forebear in almost everything."</span>

vza, aren't you appalled by this report?
ReplyDeleteOf course I am appalled and the U.S. is obligated to make sure the damage they caused will be repaired. They have committed experts and money to do so.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the fact remains that the most damage to this great site has been caused by the Iraqis themselves BEFORE and after the war.
The looting and damaging of the thousands of sites in Iraq are still going on...some for artifacts others for building materials stolen by poor people and and quite a few not so poor. Corruption is so endemic that protecting these sites is a herculean task.

Do you think that any occupying Americans are involved in Iraqi corruption vza? And wasn't the U.S. forewarned before our ATTACK AND INVASION OF IRAQ to protect these ancient sites by uncorrupted Iraqis? Yet which sites did our corrupted leaders at the time decide were more important to protect? Wasn't it the oil industry sites?
