I'm enjoying the cold weather in California. It actually snowed Sunday night. Snow at this elevation (around 500 feet) is very unusual, in fact in all my years in this area I have never seen this! Although, it did hail once enough in the 70s -- I remember making ....hailballs.
It was a total surprise to wake up Tuesday morning to see snow on the trees, the cars, the rooftops. It was a magical moment.
Now, people who are from places where it does snow are not impressed... to them, it was a dusting. Spoilsports!

It was a total surprise to wake up Monday morning to see snow on the trees, the cars, the rooftops. It was a magical moment. ----------- Magic..I have fond memories of my childhood in the south of Lebanon on the borders with Israel where winters are rather cold and snowy..Watching the snow falling had been a fascinating experience, especially the first time I ever saw snow. I was walking to school in this small country town, and I see those strange flakes swaying gently and falling on my head and when I touch them they become water!! I could not understand what that was. I was 9..Once at school I ask what that think was and everyone starts laughing at the newbie..We were fresh "off the boat" from the capital.. And yes, yasmin, I too have seen a dead cat, ours, which was locked out without our knowing and could not enter and stayed all night at the door..In the morning I open the door and there it was. Frozen..
Talking about cats are we Nice calm sunday morning, i woke up to the wails of my wife running down the street still in her pyjamas , the car that crashed our cat to death , never even stopped. I had the horrible job to break the news to my 2 small kids , it was theirs My wife buried Tom in the garden. Sad,sad, sad. :'(
Summer over here is barely a week old, by the end of the year we might well have 2009 the hottest year, temperature often are in the thirties and sometimes reach low in forties . Australia is trying to introduce the ETS ( Emission Trading Scheme) but the number of sceptics are so high that caused the government in opposition to fall apart for agreeing to back it up , and now we have Tony Abbot as a leader of the opposition ,the most conservative man history ever known , he's a non believer . Future for cats is not looking too rosy !

Uh, its FREEZING here in California right now...there's snow all the way to the bottom of the foothills. Across the rest of the US, snowplows are being told by state and local governments to stand down because the blizzards are so intense.
Its the "Gore effect"...it tends to happen whenever the former VP emerges. Perhaps it would have been best if he stayed low while his evil henchmen, like Keith Olbermann, defend his crumbling, hysterical nonsense.
I don't care so much for Gore. I saw an interview in which he was called on the fact that he lives in a huge mansion -- like, what's YOUR carbon footprint? He blew the question off by saying something like, oh, that's covered by the offsets we've purchased. That's so hypocritical!
But about global warming -- which I'm guessing you are referring to by "hysterical nonsense" -- it may not be provable by your standards, but given the potential, catastrophic consequences if it is true (& more & more evidence points that way -- ie 40% of icecaps gone?!) -- then shouldn't we err on the side of caution?
It is cold here -- the snow is rare but a few days at a time of freezing weather does happen every few years -- but we were told years ago that global warming might initially bring about erratic weather of all kinds.
Absolutely, Ann You can have (unusual)snow in California and still have global warming. It's not as much a contradiction as it is a CONFIRMATION! Global warming while meaning that, overall, the temperatures are rising, it also means the weather is becoming extreme on either end of the scale. This is something that skeptics like the dude above did not and cannot not understand not necessarily because he's an idiot, maybe he's not, but the fact that global warming is perceived as a "left wing " issue wingnuts everywhere are rejecting it..Sad lot!
I've seen that interview with Gore too...he's a hypocrite. Right now he's going on several news networks claiming the emails that were released from CRU are over 10 years old. This is a lie, considering that the most recent emails were sent less than a month ago, and one of the most grotesque messages gloats over the death of John L. Daily. Perhaps our Aussie friend, TGIA, has heard of him
As a tropical person, I was impressed with the muffled sound of winter (in contrast to summer) during the few times I lived up north. It is almost like nature put its on acoustic padding on the land.
