Gideon Levy: America, stop sucking up to Israel

"Now is the time to say to the United States: Enough flattery. If you don't change the tone, nothing will change. As long as Israel feels the United States is in its pocket, and that America's automatic veto will save it from condemnations and sanctions, that it will receive massive aid unconditionally, and that it can continue waging punitive, lethal campaigns without a word from Washington, killing, destroying and imprisoning without the world's policeman making a sound, it will continue in its ways.
Illegal acts like the occupation and settlement expansion, and offensives that may have involved war crimes, as in Gaza, deserve a different approach. If America and the world had issued condemnations after Operation Summer Rains in 2006 - which left 400 Palestinians dead and severe infrastructure damage in the first major operation in Gaza since the disengagement - then Operation Cast Lead never would have been launched."

  1. Israel of 2009 is a spoiled country, arrogant and condescending, convinced that it deserves everything and that it has the power to make a fool of America and the world. The United States has engendered this situation, which endangers the entire Mideast and Israel itself.

    Absolutely on the mark!

  2. Did anyone in Washington consider begging Saddam Hussein to withdraw from occupied territory in Kuwait?

    Good one!

  3. As it seems, Levy missed one important point here. AIPAC and the congress wouldn't allow any change..

  4. Reactions/ comments on this article on Mondowess are interesting..
    Philip Weiss:
"Gideon Levy in Haaretz tells America to stop sucking up to Israel. He leaves out the root cause. You can’t just tell the Americans to make better policy without dealing with the Israel lobby and, barring wider outrage among Americans, issues of Jewish identity."

  6. Such sillines. AIPAC doesnt "control" jack. When anyone says so we just think they are utter loons. Back to the island of misfit toys with you! lol

The US Media is not a single entity, and the govt doesnt control it. Claiming so (from australia) sounds desperate and sad.

The american people support Israel for any number of reasons. But primarily because of either cutural, socio-economic or religion. We have little to zero in common with Palestinians. As Tgia pointed out earlier, they see us as the enemy, and the reverse is true.

  8. Most people I come into contact with don't know or care about the situation in Occupied Palestine/Israel. I can fault them for not caring, but not so much about not knowing. There is a media white out about the reality. Settlements are mentioned but without any real definition or description or context. By context I mean, all the settlements are illegal and they can only happen because there is a brutal occupation. Settlers are protected by the Israeli military and by a policy of containment that restricts Palestinians' ability to travel within their own land. There is very little real information available -- you have to dig, go online or to alternate sources, to find the real story.

  9. Those Jews of J street who are mostly critical of Israel or the occupation are trying to organise themselves into a looby to counterbalance the overwhelming bad influence of AIPAC on American foreign policy..How could you know poor thing if you never read anything!!

  10. Ann, I have rarely encountered people from any country that know about Palestine. The exception are Arabs such as Iraqi Mojo.

How many Brazilians, Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Nigerians know about Palestine? Americans aren't more ignorant on this issue than almost every other country on earth.

  11. "Americans aren't more ignorant on this issue than almost every other country on earth." No, they're just fed more lies, by more accomplished liars than you. A seven-year old could see through your fabrications. Read any good surveys lately?

    RETRACT!

  12. You will get nowhere with arguments that US media is controlled by outside sources. I personally know members of the media, including some fairly powerful types. They scoff at such suggestions.

The media is in the business of reporting news in an interesting fashion so they can garner customers and sell ads. Simple as can be.
