Israeli ministers: No West Bank settlement freeze

Senior members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet reiterated Sunday that the government has rejected a U.S. demand to halt all activity in West Bank settlements, despite strongly-worded demands from the Obama administration to do so.

"I want to make it clear that the current Israeli government will not accept in any way the freezing of legal settlement activity in Judea and Samaria [West Bank," Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz told Army Radio.

My take on this is that all this "tough" talk from Obama and his administration is in preparation for his visit to Cairo Thursday. After that it's a different ball game altogether.
Another thing, notice how on the same page in Haaretz an ad for a car rental company shows a map of Israel including the West Bank!

Israeli anxiety over the Obama administration actually being serious about settlement growth seems to getting worked into a full blown lather. Ha'aretz is following the frenzy closely and reports on a meeting between George Mitchell and Israeli officials in London to follow up on the Obama-Netanyahu meeting two weeks ago. The article has the unintentionally funny headline "<span style="color: #2a5db0;">Israel to U.S.: 'Stop favoring Palestinians'</span>:  <img src="http://mail.google.com/mail/e/360"/>
