('Netanyahu may be calculating that big Republican gains in next month’s US midterm congressional elections will curtail Obama’s capacity to put pressure on Israel'. )
Barack Obama has barely a week to save the Middle East peace process from collapse, only months after he relaunched it amid optimistic predictions that a solution would be reached within a year. The consequences of failure will be serious for the US president; for the region and the wider world, they are potentially disastrous.

Obama is not any worse at fixing the ME than past presidents. His intentions are good but he has just been introduced to the realities of next month's elections as well as those in a couple of years and how the effect Jewish money can influence their outcome. Today, we see President Carter talking a lot about "apartheid Israel" but I don't remember him being a great voice for the Palestinians when he was in office. As to Obama, why expect so much of him when you have Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan twisting Abbas' arm to have him go along with whatever Netanyahu wants?
