Ahmadinajad in Lebanon, As'ad Abukhalil

"So Robert Worth said: "President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran arrived here on Wednesday morning and was given an ecstatic welcome by supporters of Hezbollah, the militant Shiite movement his country backs." What is inaccurate is the suggestion that only supporters of Hizbullah welcomed him to Lebanon. In fact, the Amal Movement has also been enthusiastically welcoming him to Lebanon too: I am now watching him live on TV give a speech in Qana. And the affair in Qana has been officiated by the Amal Movement. (By the way, people don't know that Iran also financially supports the Amal Movement). But the popular support and enthusiasm for Ahmadinajad among Shi`ites is genuine and sincere and it has--to a degree--surprised me a bit particularly because the man has no charisma or oratorical skills. Of course, every article on the visit has to mention the slaughter of the sheep. If they were slaughtered in honor of a Zionist leader, they would have not been mentioned, or would have mentioned with admiration and glee. Spare me Orientalist cliches and focuses.

  1.  The way As'ad is putting it, the welcome was by the Shia of Amal as awill as the Shia of Hizbullah as if no other groups welcomed him. It's true that the actual massive public demonstrations with the flag waving was by the Shia of both Shia political movements but Ahmadinejad was enthusiastically welcomed by the Christian President and politely by the Sunni Prime Minister. 3 state dinners were held in his honor and almost all political parties and their leaders , even those that had opposed the visit, eagerly attended and the President, Speaker of the Parliament and Prime Minister present at all 3. 80% of the Lebanese were happy with the visit and now after the visit, most of those that initially opposed his coming are saying that his visit had been a very positive thing for Lebanon because he kept preaching on the need for Lebanese unity. Of course, the minority pro-US/Israel groups are making the usual snide remarks about the visit.

  3. Sorry to go off-topic, but you might want to consider posting this one:

Imagine if, an hour from now, a robot-plane swooped over your house and blasted it to pieces. The plane has no pilot. It is controlled with a joystick from 7,000 miles away, sent by the Pakistani military to kill you. It blows up all the houses in your street, and so barbecues your family and your neighbours until there is nothing left to bury but a few charred slops. Why? They refuse to comment. They don't even admit the robot-planes belong to them. But they tell the Pakistani newspapers back home it is because one of you was planning to attack Pakistan. How do they know? Somebody told them. Who? You don't know, and there are no appeals against the robot.

  6. "When an unmanned plane killed 80 people at a wedding in Afghanistan and we asked them why, they said that they had heard that there were some terrorists among the attendees."

"When a whole village in Afghanistan was destroyed from the air and we asked them why, they said that there were some terrorists hiding among the villagers and theydidn't want to risk not killing them."

This is part Ahmadinejad told the political Science Students gathered at the Lebanese University at Hadath on Wednesday in his address  where he donated a nanoscope to the university and made Lebanon the 7th country in the world to own one.
