These men & women are among 200 African & Asian undocumented immigrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe in wooden & plastic rafts. The caption says they were “rescued” by Armed Forces of Malta patrol boats. That means they were intercepted so they could be deported & dumped back somewhere on the coast of Africa.
Immigration is a human right--not because we are ‘bleeding heart liberals’ but because they are human beings, our sisters & brothers hounded from their own countries by IMF/World Bank programs that steal their lands & advantage foreign investors/predators over human rights.
It’s no easy matter to defy the IMF in cahoots with national governments in plundering the working poor. It’s a central question in world politics today. We don’t have to have the answers to this complicated problem to demand “Open the damn borders!” “Immigration is a human right!” “No human being is illegal!”
