Loath am I to be obituary writer of the loathsome. I would much rather praise human decency than demolish human folly or even worse, human criminality. But enough of the high praise for Gore Vidal. He was often (not always) a marvelous writer. He was also a snob & a cynic, even though a forthright critic of his own class. He had contempt for everyone, including not only the hypocrisies of his own class but especially the transformative potential of working people. A few good pithy insights do not a social critic make. "Uncompromising"? Hardly! Insightful? Absolutely! But revolutionary? Not by a long shot!
