A young man grieves family members killed when a US soldier opened fire on civilians today in Kandahar province, south of Kabul, Afghanistan. So far, 16 men, women, & children are reported dead & 5 are injured. The soldier turned himself in. Another apology will be forthcoming from the White House. Another apology Obama can put where the sun don’t shine. Demand the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of all US-NATO troops from Afghanistan. (Photo by Allauddin Khan /AP)
It's March and usually there is some sort of anti-war march this month in San Francisco. The last one I went to was 2 or 3 years ago and it felt like mostly just a group of aging hippies going through the motions (with the young SF hipsters standing on the sidelines shoving their cellphone cameras in our faces). Since Obama was elected I guess people have found other things to do than protest crimes against humanity. What will it take to re-stoke a real anti-war movement, I wonder. If this kind of thing doesn't expose this war as every bit as criminal as Bush's misadventures, I don't know what will.
ReplyDeleteI often hear criticisms of the antiwar movement as a bunch of aging hippies. I was never a hippy but I am of that generation and I have been active in the antiwar movement since that time. Those gray haired men and women are stalwart veterans who have gone through 50 years of the ups and downs of antiwar opposition and have an accumulated experience of incalculable worth. Despite the vagaries of political life, especially the toll elections take on independent political action, they have sustained the antiwar movement and educated the young in methods of organizing disparate political forces into a united opposition to war.
