CNN's Sanchez fired after calling Jon Stewart a bigot

Rick Sanchez claims in radio interview that Jews run CNN and are not a minority; the Comedy Central Daily Show host frequently pokes fun at Sanchez on the air.

Also in the interview, Sanchez had mocked a suggestion that Jews are a minority. Stewart, born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, is Jewish.

Mediaite.com, a website that reports on U.S. media, writes that Sanchez claimed that American news networks are run by Jews, and that therefore American Jews cannot experience anti-Jewish prejudice.

Mediate quoted Sanchez as saying: "I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority? Yeah [sarcastically]… I can’t see somebody not getting a job somewhere because they’re Jewish."

  1. He says Jews run the media and the people who run the media sack him. Quod erat demonstrandum?

  4. CNN is floundering way behind Fox News and this whole episode is indicative of their lack of leadership than a Jewish conspiracy. Sanchez was an inferior on air personality, judging from the times I saw his show. He struck me as self absorbed, blustery, and prone to long winded comments-which would be alright, except he wasn't very interesting and often said dumb things, such as the Jon Stewart comment. And he had low ratings. My guess is they wanted to cut him loose, and were looking for an excuse. At this point the Sanchez-Stewart fued is more like the Paris Hilton-Nicole Ritchie fued than a serious news story. I don't think it's really appropriate in a forum of such a serious nature-unless it was included for a light hearted weekend story.

By the way, Stewart's show is one of the only forums where serious dissenters, such as Noam Chomsky, are given an opportunity to reach a national audience. Sanchez was good for the same old politicians babbling on and making excuses.

  5. Sanchez interviewes Mustafa Barghouti, and shows that Israel broke the cease-fire ahead of the Gaza onslaught.

  6. Personally I'm not familiar with Sanchez and I don't watch television. I saw this post on Mondowiss yesterday:

I have no problem believing that this Sanchez that I don't know at all, is a low grade bigot . I made the post because it has a certain relevance context wise directly or indirectly with the I/P issue. Mondoweiss had a good coverage of it..Why not here?

  8. Sanchez is one of those television personalities who think viewers are more interested in him than the stories he covers. His position on the Palestinian issue notwithstanding, he was prone to say really dumb things, and to do stunts to sensationize stories. He is an example of what is wrong with CNN(and most mainstream news). CNN is a frequent target of Stewart because they fill so much of their air time with soft news, stunts, and gimmicks. Rather than answer the substance of Stewart's criticism, he put his foot in his mouth. CNN has dismal ratings, and it was his time to go. As it stands now, CNN's two premiere personalities are Larry King and Anderson Cooper-that indicates to me they still have a long way to go before they are a serious news source.

  9. I have never watched Rick Sanchez.  Does he have a position on Palestine?  Is it progressive?  What is it?
