It seems to me that questions about how the law deals with sexual orientation have nothing to do with Israel's policies concerning Gaza ... or with much else in foreign policy for that matter. But if gay pride parades are to take a position on Israel, they should surely note that Israel is the safest place anywhere in the Middle East for the gays and the BLT community. Barring an Israeli float in Madrid's gay pride parade seems perverse, exclusive and pernicious. They think they could have a pride parade in Gaza?

ReplyDeleteLaughable and ridiculous! Hamas is a movement engaged in a struggle/resistance to occupation and its corollaries NOT in the establishment of a model of democracy, tolerance and openness. We all know what they, as a theocratic, religiously inclined organisation , stand for but those are not the reasons they're supported for.
The Brazilian indigenous tribes the Yanomami are also engaged in a hopeless and bitter fight of survival against Brazilian Settlers and farmers who are taking over their habitat, reducing them to abject misery but no one in his right mind would put forward against them the fact that they often fight each other, abduct women for sexual gratification and that marriage in their communities is always prearranged.
Many Australian aboriginal tribes were said to practice some form of cannibalism and violence against each other. Should that have been held against them in their fight against the European genocidal settlers?
What is the big picture here? A pissing contest Israel/Hamas on who's more tolerant to gay rights than the other or who's occupying whom and subjecting whom to an implacable siege? Reading Sullivan's post make me wonder if those folks have a modicum of understanding of what the conflict is all about.
Another point. Does Richard really ignore that a large chunk of Israeli society is very religiously inclined and have no tolerance to practices of homosexuality to which they refer to as sodomy. Not long time ago, a disco for gays was attacked and two men were killed for no other reason but for the fact that the night club encourages the said "sodomy"

ReplyDeleteAndrew not Richard..
But the delegation has recently received hints from Spain that their arrival may cause anger among local pro-Palestinian groups, which may require excess security and, more importantly, cause a lot of embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteThis was their reason for disinviting the Israeli delegation. Please.
Keep up the pressure. When ordinary Israeli citizens realise that the war crimes and human rights abuses committed in their name are unacceptable to the rest of mankind (apart from the benighted USA) and have repercussions then they may act to make amends.
ReplyDeleteRaise the blockade of Cuba.
I agree. The ordinary Israeli has to wake up to the ugly reality. The image reflected by his country should be no more acceptable to him/her than to the world at large. Israelis hasve demonstrated recently that they are largely behind their country right or wrong. BDS is meant to make them smell the coffee. It's about time.
