The mystery of Abydos hieroglyfs, Egypt

What the heck is that? Helicopters, submarines, aircrafts of sorts, all engraved 3000 years ago! I have to admit that today was the first time I see this sort of thing. I was browsing Sabbah's blog, one of the best on ME issues out there, and stumbled on this post which even though did not convince me entirely, still intrigued me somehow. Any ideas?

Today, the disputes about the mysterious hieroglyphs are still heated. Some researchers believe that Egyptians knew aeronautics secrets and could fly but later the secrets were lost. But others insist that enthusiasts are too imaginative if they see modern helicopters, aircrafts and submarines in Egyptian engravings and bas-reliefs. Let us forget the heated disputes and see what history says on the issue.

Popular scientific literature says that Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen died 3,300 years ago as a result of an air crash. Historian William Deutch made the sensational statement and also said that ancient Egyptians could go up to the clouds with balloons inflated with hot air and with primitive gliders. Such flights were available for the royal family and nobility only. Deutch says that many of the royal family in Ancient Egypt including Tutankhamun himself died with their legs broken and numerous wounds as if they tragically died as a result of an aircraft crash. The researcher is sure that strange objects depicted in discovered ancient engravings and drawings were in fact the first flying devices. Deutch even made many models of such aircrafts and found out that many of them could soar in the air. William Deutch says that aeronautics first appeared in Egypt and then spread to the territories currently known as Tibet, India, Mexico, Turkey, China and Guatemala, in other words those territories where air flows could hold aircrafts in the skies

  3. Puh....lease!!!! There are probaby tens of thousands of drawings from ancient Egypt, so just by the odds, probably a few of them look like familiar modern objects. The same principle applies to miracle potato chips-there a millions of potato chips, so chances are a few of them have patterns that resemble Jesus. That phenomenom has more to do with the human mind filling in blank spaces with things they want to be there. I would expect if the Pharoah was riding around in a helicopter, there would be some archeological evidence.

Erich von Daniken, the guy who popularized this nonsense , was convicted of fraud and other crimes before he struch it rich with Chariots of the Gods. This should demonstrate he is not above making stuff up in order to scam people.

  4. It appears that this nonsense didn't begin with erich von Daniken, but that he stole his ideas from old H.P. Lovecraft stories:

    http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/04-04-26/

    From the article:

Near the end of his life, Lovecraft looked back on the growing body of alien god fiction that he and his friends had created: “This pooling of resources tends to build up quite a pseudo-convincing background of dark mythology, legendry, and bibiliography—though of course, none of us has the least wish to actually mislead readers.” 7 Sadly, he did his work too well, and generations have now been misled by such posers as von Daniken.

  5. April 1st is the day for this kind of revelation in the UK, TG. Is it a month later in Oz?

  6. I love this subject TGIA. Will try to send you stuff on this in the future.

I believe the ancient Egyptians and Aryans (from different parts of the world) were far more technologically advanced than people today believe.

Maybe the Sumerians/Iraqis and Chinese too.

  7. I would think there would be some artifact if there was all this machinery thousands of years ago. Just going by drawings or religious texts would be like if some future civilization thought we were travelling to different galaxies because they found an old copy of Star Trek.

  9. The students' main demand is the repeal of Certification 98, a diktat of the Board of Trustees that paves the way for eliminating fee exemptions for athletes as well as university employees and their families.

If this really their main demand?

  10. What do you think the outcome will be maracatu?

  11. vza,
At this point is doesn't really matter what the main issue is. The strike has become a 'lightening rod' (?) for those affected by the recent massive government lay-offs. Support has grown for the students as the strike progressed.

As for the outcome, I am somewhat cynical. On the one hand, the administration may not be stupid enough to seek confrontation. What I feel they will likely do is allow the strike to drag on just long enough so they can cancel the summer session. That way they can save $$ to relieve some of the pressure on the budget.
