New York Times' Ethan Bronner's son joins the IDF

New York Times fails to disclose Jerusalem bureau chief's conflict of interest
Report, The Electronic Intifada, 25 January 2010
"Bronner, as bureau chief, has primary responsibility for his paper's reporting on all aspects of the Palestine/Israel conflict, and on the Israeli army, whose official name is the "Israel Defense Forces."

On 23 January, Bronner published a lengthy article on Israel's efforts to refute allegations contained in the UN-commissioned Goldstone report of war crimes and crimes against humanity during its attack on Gaza last winter ("Israel Poised to Challenge a UN Report on Gaza").

As'ad AbuKhalil, a frequent critic of Bronner's coverage, blogged in response that "The New York Times devoted more space to Israeli and Zionist criticisms of the Goldstone report than to the [content of the] report itself" (The Angry Arab News Service, "Ethan Bronner's propaganda services, 25 January 2010)

Bronner's pro-Israeli bias reporting on Israel's attack on Gaza last year was also criticized by the media watchdog Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) (See "NYT and the Perils of Mideast 'Balance'," 4 February 2009)."

  1. If a son joins the IDF, does that bias the coverage of the father necessarily?

  2. <span>Read the article. The NYT's  coduct of conduct is very specific on this point. A conflict of interest clearly evident here.</span>

  5. By the way, just to be fair, I don't really share As'ad's opinion becuase since the article was about Israel's response to Goldstone, not the report itself, it makes sense the article would devote more space to the refutations.  imho.

  6. <span><span>You might want to read Weiss' post about this issue: </span></span>

<span><span>"The larger issue here is of course Zionism in the mainstream media, how deep does it go, and will anyone ever look into it? </span></span>And on from that, Why are so many of the MSM reporters on Israel/Palestine Jews with intimate ties to Israel? Bronner is married to an Israeli and has a son in the most moral military in the world. The other Times person, Isabel Kershner, is "thoroughly Israeli," per the Jewish Forward, and married to an Israeli. The new Washington Post reporter, Janine Zacharia, is a Jewish woman from Long Island (I’m told) who once went over there to work for the Jerusalem Post. Wolf Blitzer worked for AIPAC and the JPost. Jeffrey Goldberg was in the IDF too.
    It’s like a credential.

The comments on his post are interesting as always.

  13. What Weiss thinks or doesn't is not important in the least. it's about his blog which offers a tribune for many other blogers/posters who are great people and who are doing a great job. Ahmad Noor and Ali Abunimah are two of them. Besides his comments section is a treasure box of infos and great comments.
Lat thing, it's one of the most widely read Anti Zionist blogs around and he's making a difference that many other bloggers cannot emulate. One reason is that being Jewish and has the ears and eyes of a lot of Jewish readers with a potential to change and contribute to changing the suffocating atmosphere in the US. It would be a mistake to underestimate that potential.

  14. No I'm not that person. Your question above made me think that you don't use your brain that's all. Bronner is Jewish and  judging from his writings  is already biased and now that his son is in part of the Israeli war machine he's not going to be less biased is he?

  15. I feel Weiss is a Zionist basically.  And I think it's a mistake for people like Ali to associate with him.

When you have a Palestinian two-state advocate, it's quite different from a non-Pal. one because the Palestinian is approaching it from a place of "it's the best we can do", whereas the non-Pal. is still validating the theft of land in 1948 and exile of Palestinians.  Most likely they oppose the right of return too.  Is this true for Weiss?

I think his blog is valuable <span>to an extent </span>for <span>American Jews </span>who don't know much about the issue in that he openly criticizes Israel.

  16. "<span>and now that his son is in part of the Israeli war machine he's not going to be less biased is he?</span>" True.

The observation was a general one, not specific to Bronner's case. Journalists should be allowed to work for news agencies even if their children join a national army.

    --------------
No, he's definitely NOT a zionist. He's a work in progress but at this stage he sees himself as a post Zionist becoming an anti Zionist. He sees his mission on the blog being, divorcing the American Jews from Israel and offering his blog to the advocates for the Palestinian people. Besides, he argues for a one state solution and "advertises" the idea.. As far as I'm concerned, his blog and not necessarily him, is what I'm interested in. You need to have look for yourself, it's very diverse but always interesting.
