Anger is a legitimate emotion in the face of injustice. Passive acceptance of evil is not a virtue.

Daniel Levy: Netanyahu’s stubbornness on settlements produces American call for 1967 borders
"Today's statements appeared to be part of an elaborate and ongoing dance of suspicion between the two supposed allies. During his first term as prime minister in the late 90's, Benjamin Netanyahu made an enemy of then US President Clinton and played the Republican congress against the Democrat president. This directly led to the collapse of Netanyahu's government and his fall from office. Judging by today, Netanyahu is keen for a repeat performance albeit under circumstances even less propitious for him politically. The response of the Obama team might be an interesting pointer as to where things might be headed on the peace front."
Every conflict and every situation has its own lingua franca. In the Israeli-Palestinian context, a state based on the 67 lines is the dog-whistle for what constitutes a real, no-B.S. two-state outcome. It is also language that the US has conspicuously avoided using - avoided that is until today.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope it means something and that Obama will hold to it.
Good news. There are many Americans who agree with 1967 borders. I have an ally here:

fnord frequents many of the same blogs that I do. Cool Dude! Not American, but cool none the less.
VZA, I think one of the best ways to argue for US pressure on Israel is to emphasize about how valuable a US alliance with Iran and Hezbollah would be for Americans; as well as argue that Iran's close relationship with many of America's closest and most reliable friends suggests that a US Iranian alliance is practical. {Turkey, India, Indonesia, China, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kazakstan, Kirgistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan are all Iranian friends.} One consequence of the US Iranian alliance would be 1967 borders for Palestine.
Imagine the Saudi reaction to a US Iranians alliance   8-) :-D :-P
IMHO there are less chances that the BDS would bring Israel down than Israel itself would.. It's cheerfully driving a fast uncontrollable vehichle from hell into a wall. Amen!
ReplyDeleteNot so fast anan. Ask them what should be done with ALL the settlements and you might hear a different tune altogether.. Only the dismantlement or evacuation of all the settlement can bring a durable solution. Not a single mofo of a settler should be allowed in.
