Tel Aviv University – A Leading Israeli Military Research Centre

As part of Tel Aviv's centenary celebration, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London hosted a Tel Aviv University Special Lecture Series from January to March 2009. Taking place in the midst of Israel's war on Gaza -- which had already mobilized SOAS students to organize a number of activities in solidarity with Gaza, including the first student occupation in the UK -- students and a number of lecturers expressed their opposition to the lecture series.

4. Excuse My diversion : This is strictly a history note for Fleming. I'm unable to find his comment where he refuted my quote about the analogy " Japan Palestine " where I said Japan didn't face land theft by the US after the 2nd WW whereas Palestine is shrinking by the day to a mere 8% of it's original size. My argument was this analogy does not stand.
His response which I lost after the upgrade !! was in summary that Japan Lost Okinawa as part of the peace treaty therefore the analogy stands.
Anyone please correct any historical mistake i might've made.

In 1951, a U.S.-Japanese peace treaty gave Americans complete administrative control of the Ryukyu for an indefinite period. By referring to the island as a "residual sovereignty," however, the United States still suggested recognition of Japan's basic ownership of the islands. In addition, the United States promised that, when international circumstances warranted, it would return administrative control of the chain to Japan.
Administrative authority of the Ryukyu Islands was transferred back to Japan May 15, 1972, and Okinawa became a prefectural district of Japan once again

It might be understandable , that You don't know the history of the conflict or the M.E. it's of no interest to you.
But not knowing key issues about your own history is frankly shameful .

9. In regard to the article i certainly agree with the demand of BDS in this instance. However, I am not too pleased with the fact that many institutions are nothing but seeding grounds for the military industrial complex in oppressing people all over the world. Perhaps pointing out this aggravated instance will start a trend.

10. The Ryukyu islands are key to US history? Really? Come on now.... :)

No analogy is 100% perfect VAA. Obviously. That is why they are analogies.

Take the United States of America. Our founders created a country in a land where others once lived. Do you think the land should be "returned"? Should native americans be granted the "right of return"? The analogy is not exact, but its not completely dissimilar, either.

Net-net, I think most would agree its better the US exists today than if it didnt, even though some were harmed in its making. Dont you?

ReplyDelete
11. Yep, I believe complete reparations need to be made in regard to the indigenous population. That large portions of land can be reclaimed, especially those areas being stripped for no other purpose than to line pockets already buldging. I think that it is unnatural for you not to have a similar sentiment fleming.

ReplyDelete
12. which visitor to the blog teaches there?

ReplyDelete
13. Absolutely, I know you do, Prof Churchill. :)

Dont be silly Ward. Almost no one has similar sentiments, so I dont know why you think its "unnatural" that I dont.

My great great great great grandfather robbed a train, or so Im told. So do I "owe" the offspring of the ex owners of the train "complete reparations"? LOL Is your goal the righting of every past wrong? If so you will be one busy SOB....

Tell me V, what have native americans done with the hundreds of thousands of acres they already own? Besides casinos, I mean. Would you say they have exhausted the potential of their current property? Is it the white mans' fault they have not? (of course it is, I know, dont bother)

Look, I think its so sad you are so eager for a giant handout for your people. You must not have any confidence in their abilities. Besides, it wont solve their problems. It will just create new ones. You should encourage them to achieve success in the modern world, not look for large sums of free dough from their dead relatives. Pathetic.

ReplyDelete
14. Good for your great " " grandfather, he stole some property, this nation stole lives - it was a genocide. I do not see you complaining about reparations for Holocaust victims, what is the difference - the skin color?

You act as though it was a past act, it continues to this day. Is anyone making money off the land (and all that implies)? Than that is being done to the commiseration of those who it was stolen from, their death and destruction is your enrichment, yesterday and today (don't make me enumerate the current issues). Do not ask questions about their "current property" and bullshit like that if you do not want to hear it - it is just a blatant display of your totally disingenuous question (your rhetorical points are worthless).

Handouts? lol Don't talk about handouts you jackass, with the current bailouts in the trillions. What is the matter, is there no confidence in your champions of finance and industry hypocrite? Don't use the racist responsibility line on me, wrong party fleming - that's like blaming black fathers for condition of their children when the industrial heart has been torn out of the city centers. So it is welfare for you and yours, and your corrupt elites but pull yourself up by your bootstraps for everyone else - especially people of color (black, brown, red) while they are mercilessly beaten by the system, like I said go tell it to some ignorant dote. You're are not only pathetic, you're worthless.

ReplyDelete
15. "The nation" stole lives V? Anyone living today? Is there a single person today alive today who did so? Do we bear responsibility for our ancestors sins when we come into the world? Is that what you believe? There is no blank slate at birth. Each person comes into life bearing the sins of his forebearers - straight from the womb to the gas chamber with the children of "elite", huh V?

What nation hasnt committed "crimes"? Where have people anywjhere on this planet only acted with kindness and love throughout their history? Please do tell.

How far back are you going to go to discover where "compensation is due? What about Ghenghis Khan? Dont his victims children deserve something? How about Egyptians driving out the jews? How many "wrongs" have there been in the history of humanity? You have a lot of work to do V.!! I recently read where "modern humans" may have killed off the neanderthals. Better get on the case, Columbo, we ALL owe somebody some comp! LOL

So, you want the american people to agree that, say a couple of trillion dollars of their wealth, should be transferred into native american hands? You expect that will pass thru congress some day? Then you are quite literally, utterly insane.

Yes, I know we are all little Eichmans, that has been your line from the get-go. It doesnt hold up, hoss. Its a bogus contention.

yes yes, 100% responsibility falls to the white man for all the world's ills. No one bears any fault for their condition. If not for the white man the world would be pure nirvana. What utter bunk. You truly couldnt be any more clueless.

Welfare for me? What? How do you know? I havent received a dime of govt bailout, fool. You really are off the charts crazy. You really are.

Your rage will never abate, as your wishes will never come true. Rage is bad for the health. You are going to die young.

He is arguing that the West Bank economy is improvining. Is this true? What is happening with West Bank Tax revenue? If West Bank tax revenue increases, Palestine will have the option of refusing foreign grants. This would increase Palestinian leverage on Israel and the international community.

No, i do not expect it to come up in any bill let alone pass, that is why (along with a myriad of other atrocities) this country is going to fall with a big crash, faster than Rome. In fact, it does not deserve to subsist in its current form, its going to come down.

Get some help man. Rage never solved a thing. And please, do tell us before you go off on some rampage. Innocent people, even white ones, dont deserve to die because of your incessant rage.

21. It's Ironic.

It was not until 1967 that the Australian Aborigines were recognized as Australian citizens or given the right to vote, even though they trace their origins back more than 40,000 years. They were killed by the thousands to the point of near extinction in at least on state "Tasmania " .By some they are still blamed for their poor living standards and short life span. Conveniently leaving out the harsh treatment they endured for a long time like what is known in here as the " stolen generation " , that was failed efforts by successive Governments to conform them to the white man values ,Aboriginal families were divided , children were removed by state , federal agencies and church missions , so they could be brought up ‘white’ and taught to reject their Aboriginality . in some cases this lasted till 1970. It was till 1976 the Australian government enacted land-rights legislation that has returned to the aborigines a degree of autonomy.
Last year a formal apology was issued by the new elected Government .

33. Hitler studied the genocide in the land of the brave and the home of the free, got a lot of ideas for what he was going to do. The Israelis studied carefully what was done to the original people of the Americas, especially what was done in what is now the USA. All murderous settler states exchange notes, assist each other - especially today, because if Israel in its activity is halted than it is just a short jog back to answer for their atrocities. Even when Israel suffers a setback it brings a tear to their eye, it is like watching their child fail.

Yea, you guys really burned me on the whole Okinawa thing. Great job. Oh yea....

You still dont get it, and wont get it. The lesson is not that Palestine could be some great economic power. Because assuredly it never will be. BUT, by accepting reality, and putting the effort into moving forward, it could, phoenix like, rise from the ashes of its ruins. But with your attitude there is no chance for victory unless it starts with the destruction of Israel. An impossible goal without the help of either atomic blasts or a giant invading horde from arabia. Which one do you expect?

But note the classic refernece. Its "lesson" should be clear to even the most thick headed.

tgia, there are two that can have your perspective. Your people have been UNSUCCESSFULLY waring with a much stronger force for 60 years and doing nothing but losing. And I!!!! am the brick wall who cant see??? Your people have experioenced nothing but setbacks and destruction through misguided policies that bring about more death and destruction, and I am the one who is blockaded from reality?

Dear god man, your logic is so convulated, so upside down, I can barely comprehend it.

The choice is clear: either destroy Israel yourselves or watch Palestine die. WE, the USA, are not going to "deliver" the death of Israel to you.

Third choice is to move on and make the best of it. But your egos cant accept defeat, can they? Arabs have never lost have they, because the battle is never over....

Some battles are utterly lost. For Palestine, Israel is one of them. I do not create facts, I just use common sense and observe what is reality. Again, it has nothing to do with UN resolutions or defiant battle cries. Its just the way things are.

50. I dont say that there arent things that the state of Israel does, or individual Israelis do, that shouldnt be addressed. But of course. The US and Canada have disagreements quite frequently, and arrest citizens from the other.

But you dont see Canada sending rockets into the US do you? Or the american army invading Canada? Same with Mexcio. There are ways states can disagree, vehemently, without unending turmoil and bile.

If you are hoping we are going to one day pull the financial rug out from Israel, so to speak, and that it would then collapse...well, no, that is never going to happen. I have said it before: The US is not going to abandon its ally. Period.

Israel is also not that fragile, economically speaking. You overestimate the importance of aid from the US to its economy. Two, for Israel to give itself over, militarily, there must be arab hordes/armies raging through its cities, or mushroom clouds over Tel Aviv. Which one do you forsee bringing about its demise?

53.
I agree the destruction or dismantling of Israel is not going to happen no matter how many martyrs are called forth. I also do not think it should happen. Israel exists! Whether or not the establishment of its existence was right or wrong is immaterial at this point. There are facts on the ground that cannot be changed without causing catastrophic tragedy for millions. Cold comfort I know, for the original Palestinians who lost their homes and land when they were driven out, but it is time for compromise on both sides. And sure, Israel won, but it makes a lie of their claim they want peace if they continue stealing more and more land and evicting more and more people, all for the benefit of a bunch of religious fanatic settlers who have no right to the land. That is what the U.S. should NOT support.

Both sides claim they want peace and both sides claim they want to negotiate. It is time to call their bluff. I agree, the literal right of return is a nonstarter. It is not going to happen except by force. It would be suicidal for the state of Israel. I do not support it. The only way I would change my opinion would be if I saw the Arabs, Kurds, and Turks evicting their people living on land that belonged to Assyrians so the Assyrians could have back their homeland.
If Israel goes back to its 1967 borders, dismantles all settlements or negotiates for a land swap, shares Jerusalem and resources, compensates those who lost their homes and land and does not interfere in the Palestinan state, then yes, it would be time for everyone to move on.
