Elephants: the new canary in the mine
Elephants are without question one of the most magnificent creatures on the planet earth. It isn’t their renowned intelligence but their profound emotional lives that make human beings who know them or about them simply love and respect them. Knowing that neoliberal agriculture policies destroy their natural habitats and send them into frantic exile is distressing; knowing they are in danger of extinction is alarming. Here a ranger in Aceh Jaya, Indonesia examines a 10-day-old baby Sumatran elephant. There are less than 3,000 Sumatran elephants remaining in the wild, a 50% drop since 1985.
